We are taking a week from work around the end of feb and have booked the van into Autogas2000 to get underslung LPG fitted. This means we will have the rest of the week to explore Yorkshire (neither of us have really been before).

I don't really know too much about the area so some advice on things to see and do in the area would be much appreciated!

Yorkshire

Its a big county - 4 really - N,S,E,W. Where are you starting from/based , and what type of things do you like ? Museums, sights, coast, scenery, Historic houses etc. give us a few clues because theres so many things to see in Gods County.

Well we need to be in Thirsk to start with so anywhere from there.

We like the coast but enjoy walks anywhere really. Quite open to try some new things so any suggestions at all are welcome.

Whitby would be a lovely place for you to visit. A very picturesque seaside/fishing town with nice pubs and good fish and chips. If you check the POI, I think there are parking spots on the cliff.

thirsk - so north yorks moors a good place to start. Walks everywhere, Hutton -le Hole village is a luvly place and then to Pickering to use the north Yorks Railway which you could get you into the middle of the National Park or onto Whitby - not to be missed . Scarborough is also worth a look while youre over that way.
Then back to the highlight - YORK sights ,Minster, history, river walks and National Railway Museum if interested (Free! )
Back to the dales, Wensleydale - Hawes and its cheese making tour, or Swaledale our favourite for walks.
Further west Malham cove is a must see and the 3 Peaks of Ingleborough, Whernside and Pen-y-gent nearby.
You could also visit Haworth (brontes) if thats your preference and then Bradford - National Media Museum, or nearby Saltaire - history of the Woolen mills.
Leeds if you want shopping or even the massive shopping centre at meadowhall on M1 Sheffield.
Lots more - please ask about specifics.

I'd have to agree with Steve (Ardiatwin) you are pretty central for either the North York Moors or the Dales. West Yorkshire has some gems, but then I would say that living in Hebden Bridge. Depends to a large extent on the weather as to where will be best but you could go in any direction from Thirsk. Keep and eye on what the Met office has to say for the week ahead and it should give you a good idea. Thirsk weather forecast - Met Office:wave:

Fantastic thanks for the help guys. I shall google the suggestions and see what information I can find.

Looking forward to it now. Just hope its not as cold as at the stonehenge meet this weekend :sleep-027:

Scarborough has to be a place to head for if only to keep us updated on an old motorhomers favourite.

Denison arms in east ayton! On road between thirsk and scarboro.....great big meals, lovely ales and great landlord and lady. Prob also let you park there overnight if you asked them.

Plenty of things to do in York whatever the weather. Heaps of history if you're interested, good shops and cafes/pubs if you're not. There is a really nice atmosphere in York. If you go for a boat ride on the river, you may meet my husband!

Yorkboats do trips on the Ouse depending on how the river is, if it gets too high they sometimes have to stop. Normally at this time of year there are at least 4 trips a day, 10.30 am, 12 noon, 1.30 and 3 pm but there may be more if the weather is good. My husband Keith is usually driving one of the boats and doing the commentary on the sights as you go along. If you ask the person on the landing they will tell you if he's on that day. Hope this helps!

Having lived in Yorks for 43 years, I am pretty familiar with the county , and I cant fault any of the suggestions.

York is a must similar to Chester for those who have never visited. Whitby is stunning, If you like to walk I strongly suggest the walk from Robin Hoods bay to Whitby part of the Cleveland Way ( I think ) Amazing views around everyturn and when you enter Whitby you will pass a smoking house for traditional oak smoked kippers...... Europe are try ing to ban it ( but another thread).

Jet a semi precious stone is unique to this are, and many jewellers offer their ware in the town, Southside, the cliffs are full of ammonites if you fancy a bit of fossil discovery.

One trip well worthy is to leave Whitby to the North, take in Sandsend and if the Norths Sea is agitated the rollers are fantastic and you will often see surfers , park up kettle on and enjoy ....A little further North is Staithes ( similar to Clovelly in Devon I think ) a hidden jewel in Yorks and home to The Staithes " School" of artists......cobble fishing boats unique to the area lilt at low tide and often you will find artists painting, Capt Cook apparently also served his apprenticeship here before he left Whitby and discovered Australia>

Slightly inland is Goathland the village where Heartbeat was filmed ( gives you an idea of the scenery )

As others correctly suggest West Yorks, North Yorks etc have plenty to offer too....Gods own county it is often called ......Better than that .........If Carlsberg made counties .....Yorkshire would be the blue print

How about Thirsk Races? Not sure on dates though.
Other than that I'd have to say Skipton, Grassington & Bolton Abbey. Haworth's ok if you've got good knee's.
And I always enjoy Pateley Bridge/Nidderdale too.

If you like boat trips you can do a trip from Whitby for an hour out to sea or if you go inland a bit up the river Esk you can hire rowing boats. You can also hire them at knaresborough which is a lovely little town. Not sure if all these are seasonal though.

The White Horse Chippy in the middle of Thirsk is superb. A little East of Thirsk is Kilburn where the famous Mouse Man furniture comes from. The Foresters In Kilburn is a cracking pub for food and nearby you can walk up the White Horse up onto the top of Sutton Bank. Fantastic views. Nearby Coxwold is a lovely village and a bit beyond there is Castle Howard where Brideshead Revisited was filmed. The whole area around there is stunning.

The coastal recommendations are spot on but one of our Favourites is Flamborough Head. If your into cliffs and birds its a mecca.

Going north from Thirsk, Lewis and Coopers Deli in Northallerton is fantastic. I get all my cheese from there. Further North and West (where I live) you have the likes of Richmond and Barnard Castle and beyond into the northern Dales.

Flipping heck I could go on and on but you only have a week!
