Tilley Storm Lamp. Idea For Wilding

Funky Farmer

Guest
Hi
I have been rooting around in my workshop and found a Tilley Lamp I bought when I used to be into beach fishing, big time. probably in the mid 70s. I have given it a bit of a wash and tried the pump and after a drop of oil it works perfectly. Everything that needs to turn, turns so I can see no reason why with a mantle and a drop of paraffin it shouldn't work.

I don't have the pre-heater thing or the funnel anymore but all bits are readily available on ebay.

The brass tank is bomb proof, however the chrome plated bits are a bit rusty now and could do with a good clean and a coat of heat proof paint.

If you are interested in it. PM me. FOC to a good home. Can deliver to the October meet or the Halloween meet at Radwell Mill

It looks like this but not so shiny now

Would quite like this funky but you probably found a good home for it by now.

Brilliant gear, parts still available from a good ironmongers, especially in rural areas ,made in Dunmurray NI. I gave mine to our scout group at the beginning of the year, when I converted to LED,still miss it. We could toast bread on the top when it was going. They give out about 1kw of heat ensure the paraffin is filtered to remove particles which may clog the pump.
The light from them is fantastic, but DON'T use them inside.
Tilley Lamp - Home of the Paraffin Pressure Lamp - Tilley Lamps
Ensure it is a genuine Tilley as it used to be used as a name for similar devices like Hoover for vacuum cleaners
Years ago they were about £5 then £25 I wonder what they are now? just found out they are £100+vat!!!!!
What have I done? the leds were £90.

You are a gentleman kind sir.
Thank you ever so much.

Perhaps some kind soul who are going to both your meet and the Wales meet would pick it up for me, if not I'm sure we'll meet up because I will be attending some Frosties meets.

we had a portugese one of these as our only heat and light through a nasty winter in france, until one night it sort of became a ball of flame and singed the curtains.never felt the same about it after that. just saying

Portugese eh? Tch! What can you do :lol-053: As kid, right up until the late fifties, Tilly's were all we had for lighting. Those and the good old Rayburn range for cooking and heating. Can't remember any probs with flaring or fumes. Mind, the lamps were all cleaned thoroughly and inspected weekly. I know It was my job :lol-053:
