Ticks are vile B things. The best thing I've found is to use the O'Tom tick remover. But if you haven't got one around, here's another method to try

That's excellent, I have an O'tom tick remover but forgot to pack when we went to Scotland earlier this year so bought some special tweezers but this seems an even better method.
 
I will try that, looks good. There is a plague of deer ticks in Thetford forest this year. So be warned all you cyclists. I ha three on me walking through about 50 yards of the forest the other day
 
Can recommend the tick removers, I've used them on the dog. Luckily I've never had one on me.

I keep one in my first aid kit and one in the dog's first aid kit.

Not sure I fancy removing it by hand by making it dizzy though, what would you do with it once it's crawled out? :scared:

We have the otom tick twister, comes in 2 sizes.

It is very important to remember that you have to twist the tool anti clockwise in order to remove everything from the animal. The tick burrows in a clockwise direction, hence removal is the opposite.
 
a bit of aftershave on it has worked for me in the past.
 
Ooo.. just having a shudder of revulsion after watching those vids. Nasty little beasties ugh:scared:!! Have just shown vids to 'him wot does doing' so he knows how to do the job properly and I've seen them so I can supervise!

Woudn't be without our O'Tom. A few days after being in 'tick country' it's very useful for doing the dog. Snowdonia is the worst - my wife even had a tick on her tummy from a walk there!

Or you could try the method in all those old WW2 films and burn them off with a ciggie!
 
Very interesting, thanks. I removed one from the Mutt when we were on Islay using a pair of tweezers & twisted it out a half turn anti-clockwise. I was surprised how easily it came out & it didn't seem to leave any bits behind - the wound healed quickly & well. It seems I was lucky with my choice of direction!

A shepherd friend of mine used a ciggie to get rid of a tick on my old dog before I got the green tick remover, it worked fine, no probs, just dropped off after a few hours. But you need a steady hand and a calm dog!

Apparently though this method isn't recommended as the tick regurgitates back into the animal as you do it. Can't see why the tick doesn't do that when you use the green thing :confused:
