A much debated topic but we need to replace our five-year old satnav as it can't be updated and we're baffled as to which one to get. We would like one of those that know you have a big van and don't want to be taken down narrow country lanes, etc.

Had a look at a few that don't rate highly (ProNav) in reviews whilst others are very expensive and would need justifying at the asking price (Garmin Dezl).

Any pointers please you lovely people?

Thats me then !!!

I have stuck with Garmin for many years & find them the best. Although I took some time to adapt to the latest one, we eventually became friends on our latest 6 weeks jaunt.

Garmin has the facility to class your vehicle as a bus, so THEORETICALLY no dodgy moments.

My American brother-in-law tells me that in his local sat nav shop there is a large notice stating "Do not leave your common sense in the box when you take your Sat Nav out" Wise words indeed.

I have a tom tom go 700 which I have had for about ten years, it only had GB and Netherlands installed on it. Now however I have ALL Europe west & east, Ireland and GB.There is a chap on SKEGGY market who updates and loads new up to date maps with the trimmings ,speed cameras etc ,and he only charges £30 job done !!. you cant go wrong. certainly a lot cheaper than buying a new sat nav or getting new maps added to your s. hope this helps you I am chuffed to bits with mine.By the way he doesnt only do tom toms any type he can do.:hammer:

Its all about the POI's for me. I would only buy a sat nav that is supported. Sadly the Ventrura Snooper truck ones are not and are therefore non starters.
Just for the record I have a tomtom720 and find it very good.

Hi Georgert1

Is he on the market near the camping and caravaning shop

Richard

Thanks for the pointers. Seems the trucker satnavs have a price premium but they do the job. Garmin and Tom Tom have good reviews and a high price. May be worth the extra though - cheaper than a respray!

Years ago I had a Garmin Streetpilot, cant remember the model but it gave you a choice of vehicle types including van, truck etc. I now use TomTom, cheap but works well. However, the one feature I miss most from the Garmin was the ability to drag the maps whilst navigating by it.
eg, Lets say the unit was taking me along a busy A road and the traffic comes to a standstill, you can see a roadsign indicating a turn on the left. With the TomTom I have to set detour or cancel the route selected and browse the map. With the Garmin all i had to do was drag the map (doing this on a TomTom just opens up into the menu screen) so that I could see the turning and where it led and decide if that's the route I wanted to take - not go on a mystery tour with detour. I've missed this feature the most withh TomTom and looking to change back to Garmin if it supports this feature.

Working on the assumption that if i bought a Sat nav it may accidentally get broke I opted for a cheap unit from Hong Kong.
It only took 3 days to arrive (stock held in Portsmouth apparently) and to date it has not let me down.
It cost me £54, obviously a Tom Tom copy, all European maps POIs plus included were all the silly voices available.
I proceeded to buy one for my father-in-law, but even though it cam just as quick, the switch broke shortly after he had it. I was instructed to send it back... that was over a month ago!!!! You win some you lose some!!!:rolleyes2:

I have a Garmin and wish I had bought a Tomtom, if I bought a Tomtom i'm sure I would be wishing I had bought a Garmin.

Hi Georgert1

Hi., It is not the one near the camping and caravaning shop, It is the one across the road from the main market , across from Fantasy Island ( the little market) according top my bro in law you cant miss it, he does all sat navs , seek and ye shall find. My bro in law actually took mine for me ,he has a static van in the area. If you require any further info .please get in touch and I will ring him again to get further details if needed. You will be pleased I know I am,

.

TomTom XXL

I did a fair bit of research and spoke to various users and decided to go for the TomTom XXL...........its big easy to read.and takes POIs.

Quite impressed do far...I like the idea of the low bridge and width restriction POIs mentioned by a previous poster.

I have all of western europe on mine. Cost me £118

Well it's alright to a degree - then you get a dirty big overhanging branch leaving a long lasting impression down the side of your paintwork and acrylic windows. Not much fun either if you meet something coming the other way!
