We are half way round an 8 week holiday we leave Dumfries and Galloway on Sat for the last 3 weeks in the lakes.
Ok first week isn't a problem I don't think ie. Bowness on Solway , Maryport, Allonby, Whitehaven. That route is because we are RSPB bird lovers.
But it seems reading some post that going into the LDNP is a No go ie.Honister Pass , Newlands Pass ECT.what is your advice. Ps we use the POIs

We plan to route down the coast and avoid the National Park for the time being. Even in normal times it’s far too busy there in the Summer.

thanks for that, I think we will stay around Galaway area longer and same down the coast and mis the LDNP out.

I think you have to either wing it and just expect that there may be a knock on the door asking you to move or you find a CL or out of the way site. The areas you mention seem to be in the western lakes where the Police have been moving people on and threatening them with fines if they dont. If it were me I think I would find a CL or one of the farm sites in the less popular areas but everywhere will be busy I guess.

Thanks for the reply.

Last Friday I saw a campervan parked on the main carpark opposite Windermere Aquatic, we got there at dinner time and all carparks were full, we had to drive round the various carparks 3 times before we were able to find a spot that someone was leaving, usually park at the marina but there carpark was full also.

The said campervan had two camping chairs out in the space at the side of him and a large wet patch under his vehicle, I can only assume that he has left his grey waste tap open. Then we wonder why we aren't welcome.

Hi All,
I spent the last week at the C&CC Windermere site so as to be on hand to do some boat repairs etc.

This site has a gate that leads to the Ferry Knab car park at its back end towards the boat trailer store etc.

It has parking spaces that are a little 'out of the way' masked a bit by the trees.

Whilst the parking charges are displayed for campervans/motorhomes etc and stating how many hours you can buy and also if you take up two spaces to pay
for both. As do vehicles with boat trailers etc.

However the displayed bylaws state no overnighting/sleeping etc.

A number of motorhomes stayed 2/3 nights also setting out chairs during the day/evening these appeared to be moved when the car park became near full to full.

It was very busy at all times and my wife heard some comments about motorhomes having chairs out etc and also cars and trailers using two spaces, legal as long as paid for.

It is possible that the van users were paying the going rate for all the day, about £13(ish) and doing that each morning early on, before 8am so legal during the day but winging it through the night.

If thats the case, as boat berth holders do a similar thing on the jetties to save an overnight payment, then I can understand it if the vehicle is hidden away and moves elsewhere early doors.

Its not acceptable in busy times of the holiday season when the schools are out or as now every one wants to be 'somewhere' after the lockdown.

Friday 31sy July was manic in the lake district, the shore of Windermere arround Ferry Knab/Bowness was full of people behaving like they were on the beach in Spain, no problem with that it was hot.

Vehicles were queing from the M6 junction to Ambleside in slow moving traffic.

Best time to go is outside of school holidays, mid week and avoid weekends.

That might not be such a daft idea...🤔

At least the Council can keep their nosey beak out then as the property is technically yours (wont work if one is a council tenant or in rented accommodation though) Most of us I pressume has a water tap in the garden and a garden drain for grey water. Not sure though how one may react to a stranger (meant nicely) coming inside to empty the loo though. And someone that needs a couple of bob then a donation (small) could help with bills etc.

I was coming from Blackpool so I decided to come off the M6 at Carnforth and come into the lakes from Newby bridge end, probably slightly longer, but it is never as busy with traffic that way, used to love it when my boat was moored off Fell Foot park, it was always quiter and I think we used to pay about £145.00 for the season to keep a tender there and to park the car as well at Fell Foot.

Now we are based in the Aquatic Marina which is very expensive, but not as expensive as owning a property on lake frontage, yet with a boat we can anchor up and have fabulous views and away from the crowds. The only thing is you are crammed in on the berths, would hate to see a fire occur, no 6 metre rule there.
