The wife and I are both doing the Great North Run this year, I did it last year as well but the £150 for a hotel in Newcastle wasn't too appealing again. The bed in our camper is more comfortable anyway.

Can you send me some suggestions on wild camping spots in the area?

Firstly,Harks,you don,t want to be staying in Newcastle (The start point), you,d be much better off staying at the finish point (South Shields), this would mean using public transport to the start on the morning of the run along with lots of other runners (Just follow the crowd), then when you finish the run you can jog along the mile or so to your van as a warm down exercise
I will PM you a couple of suggested spots close to the finish line and even my own driveway if necessary as I,ll be away that weekend in Scarborough.

South Shields council organise a campsite at Bents Park. You have left it very late if you want to use it though. There may be places to the South of South Shields on the coast that you can use.
