The cost of getting to north Italy???

We are taking a week long trip from Nottinghamshire to the lakes of North Italy in a few weeks time. Planning on going through France then following the cost into Italy then up to Milan and the lakes.

This will be our first European trip. We have a sat nav that can guide us away from the toll roads, and we are yet to plan seriously regarding overnight stops (aires/wild/campsite etc).

Minus the ferry price - could anyone with previous experience give a rough calculation on how much this trip could cost???

Many thanks

Hi, I do this trip once a year, but the question is ambiguous as we all have different needs when travelling.
Fuel costs -check out the mileage and divide by MPG
Subsistence during trip. How much do normally spend on food when you on the road ?
If you use local markets then costs are on par with the UK, or cheaper.
Overnighting should cost nothing using information regarding Aires etc from this site.
If you look back over my posts I did an itinerary for somebody who also wished to travel to Italy. Hope this helps

I'll give that itinerary a read through, I'm sure it will be helpfull, thank you. I suppose it is a little subjective regarding food etc. Hoping to do it as cheap as possible so will stock up on food and use the markets etc. The better half is umming and arring rearding the aires due to safety concerns, as we've not done Europe as of yet.

How long do you usually give yourself for the trip?

Hi, The round trips we do are rarely less than six weeks. But obviously, once again it depends on your wilding lifestyle.

Last year we stopped off at Mainau island on lake konstanz, & then had three days in Chiavenna in northern Italy before meandering on south. Same story on the way back - lentement, lentement as the French say.

Aires are no more dangerous than any quiet parking spot over here & nearly always have other vans parked up.

We went to a Rally in Alsace last year then went on to Lake Como to see friends. We drove on mainly A roads, the only toll you can't miss is at the Swiss border; from memory this was 60f or about £47 but that's for a YEAR! and then includes all tunnels and passes.

Most websites like Mappy.com, or Michelin, Autoroute etc allow you to set your vehicle's MPG, fuel costs etc and will also give you the tolls. We used an aire both ways that was free, BBC Teletext gives fuel prices in every european country as does the AA website.

Our friends drive from Lake Como to Calais in a car and allow 14hrs. We were just over 15hrs going and came back in 13hrs on a Sunday (No trucks!). There are quite a few campsites to the North end of Lake Como, some right on the waters edge - no idea of prices as we 'camped' in the road outside their house!

The ONLY hold up in two weeks was on the M25 coming home! Typical! Enjoy it, it's a lovely drive.
