When I left the meet today I headed for the Bosworth Battlefield site, which is well worth a visit and is only just off the A5 near Hinckley. Tonight I'm camping near an oak wood and 11 miles of forest...on my drive!

My original intention had been to have a week by myself before disappearing for a month in July, but after talking to Tintent and his wife last night and this morning I've decided to head off over the channel, instead of risking the Scottish weather.

This being the case I've come home for a couple of nights to sort out such things as medical insurance, extra battery power and where the hell I'm going to mount a very large satellite dish on a relatively small camper.

I'll be off again on Thursday morning to visit the show at Stratford on Avon as a day visitor on Friday, but in the meantime I need to bring my German and especially my French, up to speed, as I haven't used either for about three years.

Does anyone happen to know the French laws on fishing?
 
I thought fishing was expensive here!!!

Reading that link it looks even more expensive there. I'm only really interested in fishing for food, so basically sea fishing and fishing where I can eat what I catch, which never seems to be popular here. I've eaten most species and Zander is very tasty. I'm not a serious angler though, just fish to kill time and provide food.
 
Have a good time over in France, Linda and I are jealous of you, we would love to be there but work still calls maybe next year we'll make it.

I wonder if they are still using the guillatine for poaching fish in France.

Sea fishing is no different to the uk in that a licence isn't required...Atlantic coast eels are the favoured catch and the dorade is the prize that awaits in the med.

Zander, pike of course are freshwater species, and my advice beyond outright poaching is a visit to the maries office ....they will put you right and relieve of money accordingly.

Both zander and pike ( broche) in French are seen as a nuisance like here, but they still want the money

Predators.

I ate zander in Austria, where it's known as Wolfbarschfisch and it's very tasty friend of mine created a trout lake and found it really strange that he needed a rod licence to catch fish which he had bought.
 
I personally think it was a,sad day when zander were introduced to this country it seems the fens are now having a problem with maintaining balances due to their preadatory nature.

For food freshwater is a guarantee as you are no doubt aware all fresh water fish in the UK are edible...some may require purging for a couple of days even pike benefit from a steeping in fresh water changed every few hours

The French eat all sorts of coarse fish, bream, perch almost anything. But it's the way they cook them that counts.

Perch is my favourite
 
Perch is excellent, better than trout in my opinion, a little boney but lovely
 
Don't like trout much but I've had some delicious pike. I was really surprised how tasty it was.

Jackpike are the secret young fish ......anything over 10 lbs is female and best left to spawn to keep supplies going.

It is a sad fact a lot of fisherman fish for pike winter new year time this is when the heaviest fish are caught...without doubt females about to spawn....too lethargic to fight too...waste of time...young Jack in summer is best from old esox
