Tesco's free wifi

Yes I have just seen this in our Tesco superstore.

You need a Tesco club card (free). I am just wandering if it can be picked up outside the store with a wifi booster like what I have ;-) I'm betting it can't but you never know. I live just across the road from Tesco, hehehe.

It can certainly be picked up in the carpark with a booster quite well. I tried tonight. No luck from in front my house though which is just over the road.

I'd probably have a chance if there was line of sight, but there is a house in the way.

Have you tried it from an upstairs window?

If you have "K" glass fitted with a slightly dark tinge it reduces the signal quite substantially, so even opening the window might help.

I've noticed this in the van, even the brown pigments in the window absorb Wifi quite dramatically, but not as much as the GRP shell with insulation.

The Tesco store is probably steel clad and this stops the signal. The signal probably escapes the store through the glass front doors into the carpark.

I noticed that MacD fit theit antennas close to the serving area, but as they've usually got a lot of glass the signal escapes into the carpark.

Do Tesco limit the time you can use on the internet?

If you buy a cup of tea a laptops great!!

Jjust outside the doors, maybe, but they're usually disabled bays.

If you've got a tin van, very little chance.

I've got simple boosters at: Motorhome Comms

No limit to time, I don't think (fair usage policy applies). Without clubcard you get 15 min limited trial.

I will try from upstairs window in the house with a booster where I have line of sight.

I have a tin van, but I put the wifi booster either into the rooflight (Heki) or in a window (bonded mirror glass) and it seems to work OK.

I have asked Sainsburys about free wifi and I have pasted the reply below

Sainsbury's Hi thanks for your patience. We're currently trailing Wi-Fi at four stores. Crayford, Heaton Park, Lincoln and Stanway. Customers are limited to two hours per session. Hope this helps. Chris

Just got this from the link you provided, *****. The Repeatit SU2410-USB is now end of line with the manufacture, we will leave the info for existing customers reference only.
This is something I want to sort out for our next jaunt.

Only Tesco extra stores ATM, but if it works out you can bet that it will happen in all Tescos as well as Asdburyson's within 6 months.

As ever lots of info on here, and very useful too.

I don't use the interweb a great deal when on our travels but I reckon this is going to be more use me than paying out for a dingle dongle thingamy...Usually have to go for booze or fuel at some time during a trip, so it'll fit in nicely.

Also glad to see it's not just me that thinks all the supermarkets are interchangeable Firefox. I just call them blue shop, orange shop etc.
Just to wind the Boss up!

In Tesco Extra in Bangor N Wales and it just works

Except it doesn't work with the Opera browser, OK with Firefox and IE

Achieved 650 Kb/s download and 1.1 Mb/s upload, ten mins later 900 Kb/s download, 1.7 Mb/s upload. Obviously spped depends on how many users are on.

Connected to BBC I player, but quite slow at 380 Kb/s but if you've gone shopping or having an extended break then you could download at least part of your programme!!

This at midday using an extender from the van, the signal to the laptop was quite poor.

There's a MacD down the road as well.

Verdict: better than nothing, it's free and great for getting e.mails and some browsing.
