Hi

I want to use our 12volt television in our MH. we have a 75 amp leisure battery which I intend to replace with a higher 110 amp.
I have been advised by an auto electrician to put put in two new cigarette lighter fittings, direct from the leisure battery. With inline fuses straight from the leisure battery. One for the TV and one for the ariel booster.

Does this sound ok Any advice would be grateful many thanks:help::help:

That should be fine.

Find the wattage of your TV and divide it by 12 (volts), that should tell you how many amps it will use and fit the appropriate fuse. ie 30 watt divided by 12 = 2.5 amps, so fit a 3 amp fuse. There is no surge on a TV to speak of when it is switched on, so that should be OK.

A TV booster uses very little power so a 1 amp fuse should be enough. A 500 milliamp (half an amp) might even be sufficient. It depends which model you have, again, look at its wattage.

PS Just to add that cigarette lighter plugs usually have a fuse built in to them. If you get this type, you do not need to add an inline fuse, just put the appropriate one into the plug. You will need to identify which one is which or you will blow the small fuse if you use it on the TV by mistake.

make sure you have a fuse close to the battery on the cable feeding the lighter plugs in case the cable gets damaged or someone accidentally shorts the sockets.

I would use a 20 amp fuse on each one, make sure that you use cable that carries more than 20 amps.

Hi
I've used these plug and sockets in the past as well as the other two pin plug/socket types, mainly because I've seen a cigar plug melt before due to it not having a very good connection with its socket. Not saying that they are all like this, or that its the norm, it probably isn't, but after seeing that one....i don't use them for anything that is plugged in for long, unless its the tom tom etc whilst driving.
