Hello everyone, I've got a question regarding taxing a second-hand Iveco Daily I've just bought.

I'm collecting the van from Kent and driving it to Todmorden on day insurance cover. My understanding is that the van will need to be taxed immediately before I can drive it home. Is it the case that I pay the DVLA the £325 annual road tax at the point of sale or can it wait until after I've got the van home?

Any advice is much appreciated.

Don't buy until the 1st of the month or drive and back date. it. Just don't park on road as the can camp it lookup when they ran out on dvla, if last month your be OK.

It needs to be taxed to drive on the road legally, so if you wait and get caught by a camera or police, you could get fined.
You can pay monthly via direct debit rather than an up-front lump.

Well I just had a fright until I read this I never realised How much road tax was for a Motorhome I know the wife always shorns it if we aren't using it for a clear month an now can see why our trips always starts on the first of a month

is it mot'd if not you could legally drive it to an from the mot test if it should happen to be on your way home

Our big van was £165 paid in August.

If you have paid £180 you have been conned by the DVLA.
Buy a big one and it a £180 ;)
£325 for a little van though. And for a vehicle that probably does 25% to 50% of the annual mileage of the average car.

Something wrong here (Not in connection with my large van rate :) but in comparison to cars) but I suppose it is a lot less than the road tax on a car with a new list price in excess of £40000.

Just to add it needs to be taxed before it hits a public road and normally the dealer would add this to your bill and do it for you. Well that’s my experience of dealer transactions.

The ones I feel total sympathy for are those who purchased a van during that weird brief period when DVLA tax was £2000+ and £500 for the subsequent 4 or 5 years. Fortunately the trade bodies convinced the government to backtrack but no retrospective adjustment was made for vans purchased during this period.

Sadly we bought ours when DVLA jacked up rates and classed vans registered as M1 car as luxury motors. £1800+ tax first year and over £500 for the next 5 years. Then the govt changed it back and dropped the tax but wouldn’t backdate the reduction for those who got caught in between…grr!

@Quirkus
I assume it’s a self build, so before you pay the balance I recommended you weigh it. No end of private sellers offload their massively overweight vans to buyers that don’t check BEFORE buying!

As for the VED, yes you must do it online or at a Post office first.
if you aren’t going to use the van after the end of the month then Sorn it. End result your trip home will only cost one months VED.

Update to PHGV at the £165 then down if needed to the new rate £325 as the lower rate should apply .

When I checked earlier I couldn’t chance class. However now just years 4&5 to go now.

You can do it there and then online.

Either use your 'phone, or I'm sure the dealer would do it for you. I have done this with my last 2 motorcycles.
Having just recently replaced two family vehicles (second hand, but purchased through traders) the 'new' thing seems to be that a trader is obliged to ensure that at change of ownership, the vehicle DOES have road fund licence ('taxed') .. but not insurance 🤷.
In one case the insurance was transferred across and was then taxed - all in a few minutes. And by 'smart phone'.
The other vehicle needed a 'day insurance' and this took possibly as much as 30 minutes (🤪) from start to finish. I suppose as being/getting 'taxed' requires insurance, then one leads to the other ..
No complaints from me, tbh.
