Tan Hill Inn and the Green Dragon at Hardraw

Been a while since been to the Tan so don't know if it has changed character or not. The Dragon is something else, proper pub, huge portions of good honest food and a decent pint. Nice walk to and from Hawes too.

Stayed at both pubs a while back .
Seem to remember one or both started charging for parking overnight?
I park at a pub I eat and drink there . Don't expect to pay for parking

Sure is Rob. You have to be careful you don't step off that small rock face, not particularly high but you would certainly cause some damage if you did! And don't be tempted to do a shortcut, the river is like a snake, twisting and winding. Did it once, never again, it's probably only about another half mile by road.

We had a meet at the Green Dragon a few years back.

Enjoyable, I think, but the owners got a little greedy when we wanted to go back and do a repeat a year or two later.
At that point the grass field behind the pub wasn't set up for camping or motorhome stuff, think they'd (sort of!) cut the grass specially for our meet.
They weren't bothered. They'd owned the pub for quite a long time and had made enough income in that time to not particularly care whether we were there or not.

The Hardraw waterfall was also part of the property and they charged folk an entry fee to walk up to see it.

The grub was pretty good though 😋😋

No idea what the new owner will do with the pub. 🤷‍♀️

I don't mind paying if they have facilities like some do nowadays. But yes, just for parking overnight your custom should be enough.

I quite like the £10 voucher which you must spend in the pub idea to weed out the people who take the pish.

Possibly the Tan?

It seems to have changed since I was last there many moons ago. Me and a couple of mates attempted to pitch a tent on the grass verge near the car park. We got the ok from the landlord to do so. It was blowing a hooley and lashing with rain, it was just impossible. We decided to have a pint then head off home, feeling really disappointed. We told the landlord and he said just sleep on the benches when they close, he gave us a warning not to go behind the bar though!
I don't think the bar closed till after 1:00am, we were well sozzled.

Got up about 8ish, slapped a tenner on the bar and off we went.

Cracking night it was.

Different times and different owners, Ral.

Read somewhere the other day that the owner of the Tan Hill Inn has also just taken over the reins at the Green Dragon pub at Hardraw near Hawes. (y)

Both pretty good pubs.
Yes I post this in April when we were staying in Hawes. They have done a fair amount of work at the Green Dragon and it looked like there was still a lot to be done, Tan hill has turned very costly now for food and drink. A captive audience.

My mate and his missus were amongst those that got snowed in a few years back Ral.

They had a cracking time until the beer ran out.

The character of Tan hill has totally changed now. No doubt the Dragon will go the same way, but it's far better than been closed down as the Dragon was for a long time.

Tan Hill charge for motorhome parking, I used to often stop there and park in the small quarry but it had a barrier installed 4/5 years ago due to the rubbish left there.

And a damn sight easier to get to than Tan Hill.

Cost the dealer a new turbo unit after we got 3½ tons of Transit up there.. Just!
Great way to check out a new motorhome.
One February day ,our walking group ventured up there arriving at noon.
We could see a lone walker trudging through the snow.
When he arrived, an hour later, we asked him," When does this bloody pub open, we're cold, knackered and Thirsty?.

" April", was his reply

Haven’t been to the Tan Hill for years, but fond memories. Think I’ll make a point of going back early next year.

I supplied a couple of garden benches to them many years ago Kev. Looking at the website it looks like one of them is still there. They're only supposed to last 5 years with pub use so I slipped up there!

But yes, I will give it a go before too long.

I’ll be driving by next month in the car on my way to the highlands, be nice to stop overnight but SWMBO will have the cats with her, pain in the arse tbh.
