Last minute decision to have a long(ish) weekend in the Algarve. Set off at 10.15pm (from central Portugal) and had a beautiful, moonlit drive arriving in Cabanas near Tavira at 4.30am.

Just got up...

It is very sunny and warm.

Motorhoming is BRILLIANT...

going to Portugal

Hi JJ, any knowledge of decent freebie parking in North or Central Portugal. We are leaving Blighty on 25th,

Hi Alan and Norma,

Not too good on northern parkups but in general there are places all over central Portugal. Along the coast there are some restrictions (I saw a no campervan sign in Nazare last Sunday but this is the only one I have seen).

Incidently I have just put in an offer for some delightful land (small) near Ansiao and if a deal is done there will be a place for us lot to rest and recuperate provided your van will get through the smallish, forest entry road... Being non materialistic there will be no charge especially if you know anything about picking olives, cherries, oranges or building tree camps! :)

That is a generous offer! i will be travelling the area, alone, in a Renault Master conversion, next June/July.
Could I have the co-ordinates? I would stop for a rest, and maybe do a little voluntary work as well.
Good luck!

We too will be around then and would love to help. If you publish the site details, we'll see you there,

Hi, a few years ago I wild parked my then Kon-Tiki on Praia de Afife, not far from, a few miles north of, Viana do Castello. There are a few other Praias nearby, and some had motorhomes on them, but I dunno if they 'overnighted'. I also visited Fatima for a few days and simply parked in the huge car-park near basilica. further south, immediately after crossing the big bridge at Villa Nova de Milfontes, there is a waste ground, on the right, 50 metres south side of bridge, and many campers overnight there, going down to one of the beaches in the am.

Hi pokerking, this is worth a stopover for a few days.

Take the IP-1 to Alcacer do sal, below Setubal, turn left and go to Pego Dam at the Barragem Salazar (horse shoe shaped reservoir). Find a nice spot in the late sun, and stop a while (R&R). On the track to the Dam is water, showering and CDP block, all free so enjoy. It will be busy.
After that travel down the coast. Melides, Villanova de Milfontes, Praia de Almograve(water and Toilets in town here). Praia da Amoreira(great beach and on grass parking prior to beach). Just to name a few, and anywhere else that takes your fancy.
Enjoy your trip.

Happy Camping:)

Hi Alan & Norma,

Only just picked up this thread. We leave for Porto & cental
Portugal this Friday. Entering from the north we will stop on
the beach at Afife & Montedor, in Porto at Quinta da Prelada
campsite, coming back along the Douro free spots on the waterfront at Pala & Pinhao.

Have a great trip, hope this helps.

Hi everyone,

Am getting quite excited as the land owner has come up with a counter offer to mine that is well within budget. Trying to stay calm as there are one or two hoops still to jump through...

It would be wrong to call it a "site" ... (us wild campers don't do sites do we?)

It is a secluded piece of farm land and it has some trees as well as grassy area with some vines, olive trees and, most importantly, a well.

People will be welcome to stay there when it is all sorted...

In the beginning I would want visitors only when I was there as we need to ease ourselves in with the farmer who has the neighbouring fields but once all is sorted then hey... call in...

I will lay down strict rules such as NO wearing of Man Utd shirts, NO rugby songs, NO watching of Eastenders with the volume loud enough so I can hear it and FREE beer to Man City and Bath City fans. (You would have to pass a test to satisfy me that you weren't Chippenham or Scouse fans in disguise... :) )

Watch this space...
