Hello All,

We're thinking of going to Stonehenge for the Solstice ( never done it before ). I wanted to ask. Does anyone know if you can still park-up on the Droveway, which runs nearby and sleep there. Only been to the henge once and saw someone parking on it and wondered. Anyone done it ?.

We were there just last weekend. The council are apparently seeking to close the byway but at present it's open. I spoke to someone campaigning against the closure and they said that the Council do close the big gates across the byway two or three days before the Solstice. He recommended that as in previous years people park up a couple of days before that time in order to get a place and although your vehicle is locked in for a few days they will not remove it.
The byway is a brilliant place to view Stonehenge, particularly early morning and late evening.
Apparently you cannot park overnight in the official car park - they check your vehicle for items like sleeping bags etc.
There seems to be quite a war going on about closure of the byway so please sign the petition.

Hi,

Idon't think any local council can actually close the Droveway because I think owned by the Crown and therefore they have no say over access to it. It is the pathway that was the equivalent of an Iron-Age motorway and has been in existence for at least 3,000 years. The council may have some say during the Solstice but thats all. What petition are you refering to anyway ?. i hear that a field is made available about 1/2 mile from Stonehenge for Solstices and its free to stay one night. I called the local Police about this but they said that Information would be available on their website closer to the date, and that was only yesterday. Really helpful hmm, not.

It's the byway that goes alongside the field that the Stones are in. It's an ancient droveway / byway and runs apparently for six miles. The council have put up a notice stating their intentions and if you go to the Planning permission on Wiltshire's website you will get all the info.

There were about 15 vans there last weekend, plus various tents etc. It was a very happy atmosphere all round. The petition is there to sign.

Hi, Yes ! I think I'll do that, because not everything can be controlled by the officious people in suits at the council who want to tell you what you can and can't do. They'll probably say that they're concerned about our health and safety etc and then go and sell it off to a property developer. Sorry I'm ranting a bit now, but its the end of the week and I'm tired. Need to go and get another pint and calm my nerves. Cheers.

seriously, if you are wanting to chill, I would give stonehenge a miss, it is not worth the hassle.
We are going to the rollrights this year, you can park in the field opposite and they usually provide toilets, much better atmosphere and thereis usually a handfasting or something going on, too many smackheads at stonehenge, (or maybe I am just getting old)

Hello Again,

Where are the roll-right stones ?. I've definately heard of them but can't place which part of the country they,re in.

Stuart.

No problem - the stones are only about 12 miles from us :)

Can you park up for the night nearby?. Would be good to experience the place, especially on a warm summers night. Stuart.

Must admit that I haven't been over there for years...

There's certainly a layby where you can park to visit the stones, don't know if there's overnight parking restrictions though. If I get time I'll nip over and have a look...

Hi, Yes that would be really useful to know. Looking on google maps, there does'nt seem to be anywhere close by to sleep. So any more info would be gratefully recieved !

Regards, Stuart.

OK, had to go to Chipping Norton earlier so I made a quick detour past the stones.

There are 2 laybys, I couldn't see any restriction signs but they are right on the road.

However, there is obviously something going on there for the solstice because there's a teepee and small marquee in the field next to the King Stone across the road. Unfortunately I was running late so didn't have time to stop and enquire.

I will see you all there.
If you want to find me i will be doing a funny little dance with no clothes on.

You seem to have an unhealthy obsession with exposing your buttocks - did you have a deprived childhood by any chance?

I see our 'friend' manages to have another pop!!
Well, I suppose if he is having a go at you, at least he is leaving me alone!!:lol-053:

I try and avoid stonehenge if I possibly can.
My mother-in-law lives there...
