anyone use them?

Are they worth considering for wilding?

Be nice to have 'mains' power sometimes...

There are several threads about generators already in the forum where the subject has been discussed quite extensively..try searching also on 'Jenny'.

I've got a Honda 1kW.

It costs much more than a solar set up. £700 cf £200

It is very quiet though and I have used it 4 or 5 times in a couple of years for emergency or special use.

If you are not full timing I would say it's a waste of money. Solar much better. If you are full timing then pretty much essential if you don't want to run the van engine.

It can also extend the life of failing leisure bateries 2 to 3 or even 4 years. You can always run the engine to do that though. Diesels on idle are fuel efficient and most alternators can easily kick out 30 amps at 12V. That's 360w through an inverter - enough to run small power tools. If you have a common rail engine it's quiet on idle too. Just make sure you have the cabling between engine and leisure side to do it.

Honda

Hi jamessuk,

I have a Honda generator and have used it a couple of times once at Peterborough and a couple of times in France. They do cost a lot and they are not liked on camp sites, so a good solar might pay you in the long run.

Snowbirds.

Why would anyone want to generate suitcases? They are so yesterday, most people use wheeled trolleys these days.

James it simply depends what you want to use it for. In my van I use it to run either a Philips Air Fryer or a Microwave and of course it's there for anything else I might need it for.

but

because I have it I can also run the house heating (boiler and pump) independant of the grid and between times perhaps use the washing machine, or tumble drier, or the oven.

so overall they are useful pieces of kit....mine is a Honda 2kw.

I have a Kipor 2kw gennie , use it as a back up only , although its a silent ,they are still anti social .

It would be for running microwave etc

I always try to camp on my own... so would not be bothering anyone.

Thanks for the replys
