Studying on the road ..

Whilst life on the road can be an education in itself, I'd be curious to learn (!) if anybody has managed to complete either a complete OU degree or a major part of one whilst full-timing.

Now that broadband internet is available wirelessly; either hooking into a coffee-shop or pub type connection, or a wireless dongle, one of the main problems I had foreseen is largely overcome. Settling down to study in hide-away CLs or idyllic natural scenes seems appealing ...

Hi Mildred
I'm in the last year of a Geoscience degree with the OU. I'm not a full timer but do spend a lot of time away, just got back from 30 days in France from where I submitted and received back 2 assignments courtesy of McDonald's Wifi. For the 8 courses I've done so far, low speed internet is fine with downloads / uploads being no larger than 2Mb and the forums being pretty quick. As the OU seem to be putting more and more on line this may change, especially if they stop sending DVDs and expect you to stream video. At the moment, however, their PC spec does not include broadband and until everyone in the UK can access BB I can't see this changing I also use mobile internet through my phone for £1 a day in the UK. For my courses internet access about once a fortnight would be enough to get everything I need.
Even mineral crystallography becomes more appealing when you read about it with your feet dangling in the Dordogne.

Hi Mildred, Madam’s second degree came from the OU mainly while on tours abroad & studying in the Murvi. However it was philosophy, so no major physical stuff, just lots of reading and heavy duty thinking.
Apparently it helps her understand my logic after the 3rd bottle!!!! Good luck
