Strikes in Belgium

Belgian

There will be a general strike in Belgium on Monday 6 October.
Trains and public transport will be down, and most of the public offices, factories, road transport, shops, museums,.....
Normally it's allready a mess overhere, that day it will be even worse.
Belgium should be avoided that day (if not on other days:eek:)

Hiya,Leo, Whats the reason behind the general strike?

Does anyone know ?
I give you some: expensive fuel, costs of living, high taxes, lack of government decisions, pamperpolitics for allochtones, corruption, fraude, money transfers from Flanders > Wallonia, too soft justice, linguistic problems.... for the rest all is OK !
This is the land of milk and honey

But at least it shows a sign of unity with the people of your country, this would never happen in the UK as everyone thinks of themselves and nothing else:eek::mad:, We had a chance to do this in the 90s when the Iron lady was shutting down the mines and the shipyards as well as bringing down the unions and when a general strike was suggested, no one seemed interested and Maggie got her way:(

Unity ? We have only 5 governments here (with about 100 ministers and secretary's of state)
- National (federal) government, prime minister, defence, social, taxes, justice, foreign affairs, economics.
- Flemish government: culture, part social, economics, taxes, dutch speaking
- Walloon goverment: idem, french speaking
-- in this: German speaking community: culture, german speaking
- Brussels: bi-lingual; linguistic + cultural partnership flemish and walloon
>>>> too much spoons in one plate
National anthem: 'l'union fait la farce'
Swap countries Lenny ?

Strikes in Belguim

It seems to me in this country people make the right noises but when push comes to shove no-one wants the short term hardship for long term gain.Take the fuel protests everyone panic buying(me included)contributed towards the shortages tanker drivers didn't need to strike we created our own shortages.Only a few years ago we slated the french for their blockades maybe we should be more militant instead of accepting wharever we are told.Thats me off of the soapbox going for a lie down in a darkend room,Andy.

in this country nobody will back anyone, look at the miners and the steelworkers back when maggie was in power .the miners were accused of putting the countrys power out no lights no nothing not to say about the damage we did to the countries finances a load of bull so what did the general public do cried the miners down. look now we are importing as much coal from abroad as we or i dug out of this country when i was a miner, and they say coal is environmentally bad you should see the filthy coal they bring into this country from abroad i cannot speak for the steel industry unfortunately, as i did not work in it.all our gas electricity, oil ,has been sold off to foreign countries and now our nuclear energy has gone to the french so now we are paying inflated prices for our fuel needs just to keep our so called e.u partners fuel costs to a minimum and of course to bolster our governments coffers what about the pensioners that will have to decide whether to eat or heat ??????? haven't they payed there way THERE SHOULD BE A GENERAL STRIKE IN THIS COUNTRY if only to bring down our dictatorship of a government we have running at this moment in time we are feeling the pinch as they say ,lets make the wealthy who dont give a fig for us feel the pinch too

But the Belgians are really nice people! Friendly and welcoming.

However whenever we are in Belgium we ALWAYS complain about the roads - it shakes the poor van too much....... all those pot holes:eek: And the Belgian drivers are even more crazy than the Brits. :(

Thanks for the compliment. :D:D
But about the roads, you'r right. of course we blame the foreigners for creating the potholes :eek: About crazy drivers, I agree; but some of those more southern countries are worst even
Seriously now. About the strike of october 6th. The unions are blowing warm and cold at the same time. Sure, there will be an almost general strike in public offices and -transport. But on private domain it is a big ?
Just wait and see; play safe and avoid Belgium on 10/6
