Link: Storm Filomena: Spain sees 'exceptional' snowfall

"Storm Filomena has blanketed parts of Spain in heavy snow, with half of the country on red alert for more on Saturday.
Madrid, one of the worst affected areas, is set to see up to 20cm (eight inches) of snow in the next 24 hours.
The city's airport has closed along with a number of roads."

My brother in law used to live in one of the many apartment blocks and tower blocks (mostly fairly modern) in Madrid that also seem to be common all over Spain. He was always surprised that many of them had no means of heating installed. I assume they must rely on portable oil radiators or fan heaters. If it continues to be cold for long I expect there will be a surge in deaths of elderly people.

I remember visiting many years back and we drove to L’escorial for a visit. I was taken aback at the many Swiss style chalets above Madrid. I hadn’t reckoned on it being a popular ski area. I suppose I didn’t appreciate the altitude having flown to Madrid. Over the last few years visiting by Motorhome, you get a better feel for how mountainous the country is.
