Need a top or back box or something that would do the job. Possibly something that would go on the bike rack? Any ideas welcome. Thanks:)

I've seen the small plastic garden storeage box's from b&q mounted on bike racks
don't know if they're any good as I haven't examined them close up
but wouldn't break the bank if suitable!

I quite like these

From fiamma and only £55

But if you go to the army surplus stores and buy a large kit bag it will do the same job

back box

Hi

I bought 2 boxes to go on my scooter rack although they are that big 1 will probably be enough. B&Q supply them, they have 2 pull down fasteners on each side and at each end there is a hole for either cable ties or padlocks to be used. They will not be as secure as fiamma solid white back boxes, but they are substancially cheaper. In fact mine have a handle at one end and wheels under the other, just like a suitcase incase I want to take it a walk around the site!!!!!

I also have a top box, but find that even with ladders, it is high up there and do you really what to be up and down from the roof. I accept that they can be useful and although strong they are also shaped like a brick (the fiamma and omni ones). Mine is down the garden getting weathered again for the second year!

There are quite a few alternative boxes that are available, some with locks  and some without. All can be broken into quite easily including the Fiamma:mad:

Last year Halfords was selling off a whole load of roof boxes and boot boxes from a roof rack maker - Rhino maybe?? The stores that I visited were quoting 75% off, so maybe some bargains are still around as they did not seem to be selling at all quickly - they were there in Feb and still there in September!!

The other thing to consider is galvanised tradesmans toolboxes, usually come with padlock clasps and vary in size upto small coffins. Steel is obviously more durable than plastic, but weighs twice as much, which is an issue on a bike rack with limits of about 50kgs (if I remember right).

We have an alloy box made by Westfalia, about 1.5m x .8m x .8m and empty I can lift with one hand, but its been in the wars with welds becoming brittle over the years and did not last well on about 300kms of dirt roads in Finland. I had to use some exhaust clamps to hold it onto the carrier rack, usually just one bolt and a clip arrangement.
