Stopovers in France

Hello
We are shortly going over on the Chunnel via the Alpes and back to the South via mid France. Having bought a selection of books ranging from Viscount Aires, Cool Camping through to Alan Rogers we are completetely open to suggestions but wondered whether any of you French savvy campers might each recommend one absolute favourite "must visit" site or Aire on the way down or back - thanks v much Jayne & Andrew

We don't bother with any books just have the Campingcar Infos on my hardisk. You can buy or download it. Just got back from being away for 3 months, spent about 6 weeks travelling back across France from the Spanish border up through the middle of France. Difficult to give a favourite aire as it often depends on circumstances such as weather, who we meet, as well as the location. We travelled to areas we haven't seen before & want to go back to the areas around the Tarn, Lot & the Dordogne (although we have done the Dordogne a couple of times before). We never had to pay on any of the aires we stopped, some even had free electric hook up. Always find the area around Paris difficult to find aires.
You don't say how long you are going for, France is a big country but most of the roads are very good & we never need to use the pay motorways.

We thought Loudenvielle near the Pyrenees worth visiting. Two aires, both free. Lake, supermarket, cheap WiFi at tourist office, restaurants, laundry

Work out roughly where you want to go, set your navigator to avoid toll-roads and motorways and just wander. Always somewhere nice to stop for the night.

Hi Jayne & Andrew. I personally use motorhoming france website costs £12 a year info is very good lots of photos of aires also a small map of town with aire marked

Aire: BRIARE

EMAIL: mairie-de-briare@wanadoo.fr
TYPE OF AIRE: MUNICIPAL

FACILITIES: WATER /GREY DRAIN/ BLACK DRAIN

LOCATION: URBAN NO. OF SPACES: 4

PRICES/ RATES: PAYMENT by CB

PARKING: FREE SERVICES: 2€

OPENING TIMES: ALL YEAR

GPS COORDS: N47.663189 E02.73939

DIRECTIONS: Approaching from the NORTH on N7, turn off at BRIARE onto N2007 towards town. Turn RIGHT after crossing CANAL & follow road alongside canal to AIRE.

SITE DESCRIPTION A new aire was opened next to the canal in late 2009. The services are Flot Bleu with a large drainage platform. There are a couple of pleasant spots for a stopover, both are close to the famous "Pont-Canal" (a canal bridge over the Loire river), the first is just 200m east of the "Pont", alongside the canal with parking on tarmac in a peaceful spot (N47.63417, E02.74000) & the second is 100m south of the "Pont" on the east bank of the Loire in a tree lined spot with parking on gravel next to grass areas (N47.63167, E02.73995). Both locations are about ½ km from the town centre & its shops.

REVIEW:

2008 The parking is very good -- we parked under the Pont Canal, next to another canal & overlooking the River Loire. To get here follow signs for Pont Canal & cross over road bridge at eastern end of Pont, large parking area is 100m on right.
BRIARE, Green Flags are parking places

This a sample of info on each aire

HOPE THIS HELPS Terry
