Spare wheel again.

I've been catching-up on the spare-wheel-thing, spare-wheels are mostly a pain in the ass but we need a spare. Compared to most of you my spare is in an easy position to get-at and because it's indoors it's kept clean. The problem is that my spare-wheel is kept in an under the van compartment and robs me of storage for other stuff that needs to be kept dry.

I don't particularly fancy the idea of an underslung chassis mounted one but how about this ?

Has anyone seen a spare mounted onto a tow-ball carrier ?

Richard.

This is not my van (my wheel is on the back door).

I kept the pics because I thought this home made carrier would make a great swing away bike rack. Always a problem on van conversions when access to the rear doors are needed.

Yes, I see plenty of spare wheels mounted on the tow hitch of 4x4s. The photo on the previous post is as good as any. If you dont have a rear door its easy enough to have just a vertical post that holds the spare. Just bear in mind that spares can be heavy and lifting it high enough to (un)mount on the carrier may be a two person job.

I've got an underslung spare and it gets dirty, but hopefully only gets used when I'm rotating tyres or as in the past couple of months when fixing a puncture. I can live with that occaisional problem and have a pair of gloves anyway.

I'll do a little research though it looks like a custom built one that bolts to chassis extension holding the tow-ball might be a more secure way of doing it.

Thanks jogguk, for the piccs. Our camper got an egg on the tyre just outside lourdes. Mine is underneath. hour and ten minutes to change. So that idea looks good to me.

Yes you can, you'll have to do a bit of internet research on 4 x 4 sites but I've seen a carrier that utilises the two bolts on the towbar like a thick washer so to speak and bolt straight through it so you can use the towball as well.
