We are planning to go down to Spain/ Portugal this Jan for about 7 weeks via Calais, anyone know what the Wilding is like these days.I know it has become more difficult on the coasts lately , I know lots of stop overs but am wondering what the overall situation is like, we like to stay a few days in one place and then move on. We most likely to head for Victoria Gasteiz Spain to start off via the western route through France Bayonne etc . not too concerned about the weather on this route as we have done it many times with little problem really. Any one down in Spain wilding at the moment ?

Will be disembarking this time next week in santander for first trip > month long looking forward to getting away from this weather

We often go via the N121a from Irun to Pamplona and stop at use ares at Pamplona, Agreda, Casalarreina (by Haro) Avila, Segovia Ampudia north of Valadolid, Valle de Jerte and quite a few more.
Never had any problems and can even sit outside if not taking the piddle.
Much more relaxing than the Med coast.
The Atlantic coast is also pretty easy going!
We particularly like the Rioja region and Galicia

edit
Portugal is a doddle, particularly inland!

Are you suggesting these places in January for more than a night's stopover?

I've been here in Spain a few weeks now and had no problem though I did go to La Mata last week and there weren't any vans there. I'm in a lovely spot at Nerja at the moment. La Azohia is still going strong.ive heard of people being moved on in Portugal though.

There is already a current thread, " Portugal", running on here.
Worth a look.
It might be more simple if we all just used one thread.

Everybody likes different things and places, it is obviously up to the individual!
Myself, yes I could chill out at any of the locations I have suggested, but I think the main question was not about exact locations, but the feel of using aires in Spain and Portugal

"Chilling out" is literally what the OP would be most likely doing in those areas in January!

think looking at a weather map of spain at the moment might help in making plans where to go.

Hey Byronic, as you are well aware, I used to truck week in and week out to Madrid, via Pampalona and some of the best times I have spent for views and scenery have been in January and February.
Don't be afraid of a little winter, the scenery in that area is fantastic!

If I wanted a little winter I'd stay in little England!
In January I'd guess 95% of people go to Spain to escape
the cold. I go through these areas in November and late March even then
a warm day is the exception not the rule. But just driving through and parking up at night as in truck driving is somewhat different to spending a couple of days in some aire.
Still, you might be one of the 5% and enjoy a winter inland Spanish experience,
wish it was 95% believe me, then we'd have a bit more space on the costas.
Must have been 20 something degs today!

95% and rammed full, English, French everywhere, watching for the Guarda Civil to move you on:scared:
That is not my idea of relaxation, OK, sunshine and warmth, I will give you that, but even up in Rioja Country, the sunshine warms up well above the shade temperatures.
But what has this got to do with what the opening poster asked!
He asked for the up to date feel of wilding and using aires!
At least we agree on one thing, you sun seekers stay there, in busy crowded resorts and I will stay where it is the real Spain

there is alot of snow this year covering the middle of spain , many roads have been impassable . much more than normal.
could be worth just checking on the weather camera web sites .
i know they do normally clear main roads very quick but they are getting caught out just lately.

Or you could come to the Cote d'Azur instead ...

17C today, sunny and pleasantly warm. No motorhomes of any nationality to speak of so lots of lovely places to spend the night :D

Like it or not, the costas are a significant part of modern Spain.
I leave the so called 'real Spain' visiting to Spring or Autumn.
And 5 months winter on the warm costas, just my preferences.
Threads have a way of going off topic, just the way it is, particularly when
they start expiring before then dissapearing off the home page and into the archives never to be seen again.

Yes you obviously know the kind of weather you might reasonably expect
oop north and inland. I felt it'd do no harm to point this out to those that read this thread and aren't actually aware of this (and there are a number).
Wouldn't want them to go expecting a shorts and sandals walkabout,
and instead wishing they had packed the skis!

We made a bad decision on year and decided to go over the Pyrenees at / near St Lary Soulan, lovely mountain ski resort town, but next morning we were not allowed over the Mountains unless wearing Snow Chains so had to fit them, not a lot of fun snow chains.

i know its not one of the main routes through spain , but going over the peco.s de europa even on the longest day of the year you can still find snow enough to make snowballs and have a snowball fight. it really is amazing place .
you can be on the med in shorts and look inland to deep snow usually most winters , go inland 6-8 miles and its a different world.
catches many out .

please

please keep us all informed it is sept oct for me, once again thanks keep your spirits, up we, that is those who are watching this space. are with you all the way.pj

Even more surprising perhaps, is after roasting on a beach near Malaga
in midsummer to then drive in less than a couple of hours up the
Sierra Nevada's and find snow. The SNs rise to over 11000feet,
so perhaps not such a surprise!
