Hi We went to southern Spain and Portugal last winter 2016/17 and spent far too much on fuel moving around from free site to free site. This next winter we will go out again maybe January to early April and want to spend a week or so on a site and appreciate this would be better on a fee paying site. Can anyone recommend some sites that are not too expensive? We don't really need electric but the option would be good. The sites need to be within walking distance of local amenities, we don't want to be stuck in the middle of nowhere so to speak. many thanks Alison

I recommend that you buy the ACSI book - there are plenty of good off-season rates in there and if you stay more than a few days, you often find the rates come down. If you stay a month or two at certain sites, the rates can be exceptionally good.

CampingCard

Ps The book runs from 1st Jan to 31st December, so if you are going next year, don't order the book until the new edition comes out in December.

I like Camping Azahar , Bennicasim Spain, cheap and cheerful Spanish site great area, close to the very nice town and sea front, big Fiesta there January Feb ? San Antonio, ? busses to Castelon if wanted, , there is another site a bit further up the road if you want to pay a bit more but busier, Camping Bonterra, right opposite a Super Market and a nearby Lidl. Azahar becomes cheaper for longer stays too.

Had a look at that campsite but cant seem to get any prices or even bookings available during Jan-March 2018?

+1 for the ACSI book. Most Spanish med campsites have a sliding scale of charges. If you stay for months the price per night is vastly reduced. For instance Kiko Park in Valencia province is £28.40 per night for 1-7 nights, but goes down to £12.05 if you stay all winter (over 150 nights). Thats the CCC price. It is the same sort of reduction if you go to a lot of the other big sites and book direct. For shorter stays the ACSI Book is best.

not planned to stay as long but we stayed over three weeks at Manta Rota nr tavira portugal alongside a beach you cross boardwalks to get to the sea but 12 mls of lovely beach think it's €4:50 for 24 hrs free water and dumping you can choose to pay for electric in 12 hr slots only couple of euros i think we never bothered free wi fi but weak walk into the village reasonable supermarket butchers etc only a few miles to a large town with main supermarkets plenty of bars restaurants within walking distance,

We like Serpa and the Municipal site is cheap - around 10 Euros. Quite far south in Portugal, but not the Algarve.
There is everything you need in the beautiful town, and the bread rolls are braw!
There are reviews of the site on a number of MH websites - I prefer the Dutch one. (Ignore any comments about the toilets/showers as the work on them is finished)

Not all, but many give a notable discount only after 28 days or a calendar month.
There are exceptions, reducing still further for 3 months or 90 day periods etc.

There are a few cheaper sites aroung Peniscola, some as low a €9 but they're a fair step to the beach. There are also camper parks at Calpe and Cap Blanch near Benidorm - these fill quickly but if you ask sometimes they tell you when another van will be leaving. La Torreta, in Benidorm, is cheaper the longer you stay. However on most sites offering long stays electircity is extra. As said already get an ACSI Camping Card book before you go.

Estarreja has a parking place for motorhomes right in the town near the river. Think they say three nights but are not strict in the winter, friend stayed three weeks in 2015! The pitches have a electric hookup and were very reasonable (?8 euros night? ) But only three places. Up north below Porto
