Spain - North of Madrid - suggestions please.

We're off next week for a 4-5 week trip through to Spain.

We go every year, but in September to November through N Spain into Portugal and back via Granada, Calp and Valencia.
This earlier trip, we want to explore north of Madrid coming in from west of Pyrenees and leaving at the east end.

We like to use aires (areas) and small/municipal style campsites that are in easy walking distance of interesting towns, markets and especially cafés

Suggestions please.

North of Madrid is El Escorial and Valle de los Caidos (closed on Monday) both are well worth a visit. There's an ACSI site about 3 miles out of town but on a bus route both ways.
