Southern germany

In May this year I shall be travelling to southern Germany in convoy with 3 other motorhomes. Although I have been into France on many occasions, this will be my first experience of Stelplatz. We intend to travel northwards up the Romantic Road and return down the Mossel valley. We will be away for 8 weeks and therefore cost of stopovers will be a factor. We will be looking to use campsites on a limited number of occasions and rely mainly on Stelplatz and a number of nights wild camping

Any help, assistance or guidance would be great help

Many Thanks

John

1st thing to get is a book "An bord atlas" from Amazon to show you all the stelleplatz, nice place to stay is Oberstdorf Bavaria, a bit pricey but nice location, 5 min walk to town centre. Enroute call in at PRUM IN EIFEL near bel/lux border, theres a campsite (cheap, "Waldcamping" nice showers etc...) but also a stelleplatz(FOC) in the town near indoor baths .

For campsite stays, get an ACSI guide - and keep an eye on electricity consumption - the ACSI price includes only a certain amount of power, and many German sites are metered. The Kwh charge can be quite high!

For Stellplatze as already said - get the Bord Atlas, brilliant. We did the Romantische Strasse (North to South) last year (before Austria, Bodensee, Black Forest and Alsace) and the Mosel the year before - absolutely brilliant place for motorhomes!

Agree about Bordatlas invaluable but also if you pop into the local tourist offfice they will give you a list of stellplatz.
We did the mosel and then the romantic road followed by the black forest.
Germany is so motorhome freindly.
On the mosel be prepared to pay up to 10E per night and then pay for water and hookup...most were around 5-6E
The water on the mosel is metered and timed say 4mins or supposed to be 100l or 10l for 10cent.

One place either at the start or end of Romantic road (depends which way you go) is Wurzburg...you can park overnight for 3E no services but it is at the bus park right by the river close to the main bridge with the statues for easy access to the main part of the city. Great to watch the river cruise boats go by.

I am sure you will enjoy the romantic road we did so many towns each with their own stell.

One place that was not in the Bordatlas was Lamsberg am lech a new stell in part of a barrier controlled carpark only 1e per day. Only tip is avoid it at weekends as it can be noisy as people going to local night clubs use the car park and can be noisy. You have to go see the church there it is truly stunning.

We enjoyed the mosel but found it a bit samey after a while but very good stells at Traben-Tarbach 10E per night including water, hookup, showers and free wifi. another is at Wintrich which was 8E inc elec and free wifi.

Off course there are many free stellplatz and some with even free services...you will find most are free to park except the touristy popular area eg Rothenburg ODT which was 10E for 24hrs but worth for the town a tourist trap but lovely to wander round.

Any questions feel free to ask

southern germany

hi, can i direct you to: touring24.info its a german site, but it has got both routes you ask about on it, and it gives maps with the routes and stellplatz clearly marked, at fussen ( south end of romantisch strrasse) we usually stop at camping baanwaldsee, its clean and friendly, hope this helps, ian and mel

Hi Ian/Mel I just tried registering but it kept throwing me out. The bit I looked at before regeristing looks good. Any ideas?

Stellplatz everywhere just like Aires in France. Some free some a few euros.

The only resource I use for finding Aires, Stellplatz etc is CAMPINGCAR-INFOS. You dont need anything else. I have the POI for the sat nav which is free and the offline version for the laptop which I think was about €8. Germany is very well covered. You wont need anything for the Mosel between Koblenz and Trier. Just follow the river and you will be tripping over them. Gets a bit boring after a while though.

you may have to wait for confirmation, before you can " anmeldung," how ever the info available is well worth it, we have found a stellplatz in fussen not too far from the town centre on it, and are going to give it a try. we will be going on our german tour end of june beginning of july, hope you enjoy germany as much as we do, regards ian and mel

Thank you, just got confirmation, went into my junk mail. We love Germany and go there at some stage or other every year. We retire this year so are looking forward to many long trips in Europe and an extensive visit to Germany amongst other places. This year as our first trip we're heading for Turkey to visit friends and coming back through Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia and Poland (to visit more friends) then home through Germany. 6 months this time :)
