to help sort the ferries out , we are having 3 weeks between the isle`s sailing to south uist and retuning from Terbert,
are we most likely to spend more time on S/N/UIST or more time on Lewis/Harris?

I would say more on Harrisband Lewis when we did it a few weeks back we intended 5/6 days on N/S Uist and 10/12 days on Harris and Lewis a gas issue stopped our plans but I am going back later in the year.

Horses for courses .I liked all four, but with a slight preference for Harris . The mountain are can be seen for miles . don't book any ferries other than your on and off boats at either end of your trip.
If you get a chance , try to read the first book of the Lewis Trilogy. We were home before we found out about the books , read them and felt we new where the author was talking about in his story. We will probably be going back late summer , so I'll re read the books.
The Uists are quite flat with hundreds of loch dotted all over.
I really enjoyed the Hebrides , feel Shetland is a long time on the ferry , but supposed to be worth the trip.

I forgot to say that once you have initially booked your ferry you can change the dates you leave each island they just need you to check with them for space on the boat you are moving to.

All of Uists great. Harris is magnificent. Lewis much less so . Lewis worth it for the archaeology but otherwise a rather featureless peat bog. Stornaway of limited attraction
