Has anyone had any experience with solar radios I'm looking to get a decent small one with headphone jack for on the beach and in the truck.
Any knowledge will be greatly received.
Cheers Rich.

Got one of these. Don't know if you can still buy them as I have had in 10+ years but its a great wee radio!!

Freeplay Ranger Wind Up Solar Powered Rechargeable Radio

The Ranger Self-sufficient Radio promises assured listening, anytime, anywhere.

Offering a choice of wind-up, solar and rechargeable power, the Ranger incorporates the latest in Freeplay's self-sufficient technology - which means unparalleled sound quality, playtime performance, dependability and durability.

In a compact, rugged and stylish design, the Ranger AM/FM radio is fitted with a DC input facility to accommodate the AC/DC adaptor(supplied) and an earphone socket for personal listening.

The Freeplay Ranger will play for approx. 35 minutes per 30 second wind (normal volume), and can be rewound at any time for as much playtime as you want.

An LED charge level indicator tells you the best speed to wind. And in direct sunlight the Ranger will charge itself and play continuously without winding.

The internal NiMH battery can be fully charged from the solar panel or the AC/DC adaptor. The Freeplay Ranger will give 25 hours playtime, depending on volume, when fully charged.

I have the same model and it's very good - highly practical when out on the road...

We have a solar powered radio, not sure what make or model but its well battered and yellow:wacko: but works virtualy anywhere.:banana::banana:

We bought this solar radio a while back and so far it has worked fine for us. It also has a wind up arm so when the sun is gone we can wind some more power into it. I haven't as yet used the headphone jack but it does have one

Solar Radio or battery?

I have one of the early Freeplay Solar/Wind up/3v to 12v DC AM/FM set.
It works ok but the solar function needs full sun and stops every time a cloud passes over. Wind up works but needs rewind every 15 - 20 mins. The extension lead for DC works. Reception is OK but not exceptional. The whole set is bulky and let down by poor build quality.
Quite honestly I can't see the point of owning it.
I also have a pocket size Panasonic LW/MW/FM/ 9 band SW radio which is far superior, gives excellent reception and runs for weeks on an inexpensive set of 2 AA batteries.
The idea of free solar power is attractive but for me it has too many drawbacks for a radio.

I have a Roberts portable am/fm radio with short wave. It runs on AA batteries and recently on a trip to Mongolia I took it and some rechargeable batteries and a Freeloader solar charger, which charged the radio batteries,my Ipod, phone and camera.
I needed it as I sppent the time with the nomads who did use the Freeplay windup radios. One in particular, had a massive solar panel powering a satellite set up and lighting in the Gers/Yurts.

Got a small gelert solar/wind up and it works perfectly well for us...reception varies from ok to poor but costs nothing to run...got it at Go Outdoors a couple of years ago...small and compact and sturdy rubber cover for protection.
