I am about to purchase a 80w panel but going to double it to 160 0r 180w after xmas.
So what size regulator should I get? I have a 6A given to me but dont think that's enough.
Can one of you guys enlighten me please.

Think I may of got answer, looking at some threads. Is it 10x example = 10amp so if I
get 2 x 80w would need a min of 16amp??

hi, 6amp for an 80panel is ok. be very lucky if you ever see 5 amp from one anyway.
i link 3 x 80wat panels together and use a 30 amp reg only because they can be bought cheap. i use two banks .in an emergency i can join all of them through one reg if need be. cant have too much power . big batteries as well.

Hi Devonlad,
We have a 130w panel and reguarly get 9amps when under bright French sunlight. We use a 10 amp steca controller, great units with loads of information as to performance, thoroughly recommend them. To be on the safe side though, think you will need a 20 amp model.

re solar controller

hi i have 2x100watt and 1 80watt panel on the roof of van and a 20 amp secta controller i dont know if it copes alright but battries are full all the time any body no if this is set up is right thanks

I have an 80 watt wind turbine and the instructions say that a 100 watt solar panel can be added to the circuit. The regulator that comes with the wind turbine is 7.5 amp.

For the past year, I have used a 90 watt solar panel and the wind turbine together. In gale force winds and bright summer sunshine, I was over 7.5 amps and had no problems.

Based on this, I would say that a 10 amp regulator is sufficient. If you want to be certain, get the next size up.

I've got a 90w panel. It is supposed to give 5 amps max. I am fitting another 90W as well so 10 A total max if wired in parallel.

I've got a 16A max regulator. I think that is slightly over spec. A 10-12 reg would be OK. My panels are not tilting, I doubt if I would ever get 5A from them in British conditions.

10A reg would probably be fine for 2 x 80W panels.

solar regulator

I have a 20w polycrystaline panel which gives 1.25A in full sunlight, so I guess at 180w you'd be pushing 10A regulator too hard. Better safe than sorry, go for a bigger regulator and then you can go up again in capacity with minimum effort.

Seems to me that solar is the way to go, especially now the panels are getting a bit easier on the pocket. If it keeps your batteries up without effort it's got to be worth it.

Cheers

Really appreciate all your help, think I will get a 20amp incase I go bigger later on.

Thanks Again Devonlad
