solar panels for battery charging.

hi all you guys and travelers, is there some one who can advice me?? i have a autotrail with two 85 amp leisure batteries and my main vehicle battery probably about 120 amp, this gives me a total of some 280 amps.

at the moment i disconnect the main battery from under the bonnet, and remove the fuses from the leisure batteries. this is ok for a month or so but i get worried over a long period. someone suggested a soler panel placed in the window, great idea but what type??.

went into maplins today and guy suggested a 4 watt soler panel for £24. he reckons it would take 500 hours to charge a 85 amp battery. that tells me 10 days? the batteries will be charged when left on soler panels but will a panel keep the charge? i would be happy to put two panels in, one connected to main battery, the other to cigarette lighter.

any suggestions greatfully recieved, -i hav,nt got a clue about amps and volts. all services to the van will be cut of except for alarm clock etc.thanks.

4watts would not even keep it charged in the summer let alone winter. 40w absolute minimum would be required.

You probably knew this, but if you're going to charge through a lighter socket make sure it's live with the ignition key out...
