SOG tiolet system

Thinking about fitting one of these systems. Better for emptying black waste when wild camping. Anybody got one fitted and what are your thoughts?

I just had a look at their website as I didn't know how it worked before.

All it consists of is an extractor fan and some ducting. One could probably knock a system up for £20. Even if you had to switch it on manually before you opened the valve it wouldn't be a big deal considering the savings on aqua kem.

we had one on the last van but didn't think it stopped the odours plus the vent was in the safari room area so it made a bad situation worse.

I have one in my MH Fitted before I bought the van in 2006.

There is a carbon filter in the vent in the door that can get bunged up and then you can get smells. I have never found any unpleasant smells in our Safari Room.

The flexy pipe is more plyable than the standard ducting pipe and if this is not tight then smell can leak out of the cassette.

THe only problem I had was a noisy fan that ground to a halt. Sprayed it with WD40 and it is still running very quiet now.

Him wot does testnical in our house put a SOG system in our last van and cos we were pleased with it, has put one in our new van. He says any competent DIY person can fit it. Should you require to learn what is involved before you buy one, fitting instructions can be found on the web at this address http://www.outdoorbits.com/Brochures/SOGB_instructions.pdf
The cost of purchase will soon be recovered by not having to buy chemicals.

Thought of fitting one but couldn't see the point. We don't use chemicals as they spoil the environment and apart from emptying smells dont suffer from bad odours.

On another forum people were really praising the SOG system and it seems from that discussion that the benefit of the SOG is only present if you use the loo in a particular way!!

It seems as though prior to use most people open the blade valve and do the business -this allows bad smells to come into the loo from the tank which are neutralised by either chemicals or the SOG fan.

We do the business close the lid then operate the blade so minimising the chance of bad odours entering the loo.

Perhaps we should have a poll to see which method wild campers use??

On my van (Burstner) the fan starts automatically when the blade is opened and stops when closed.:p

When I picked up the van from Discover, they had put blue chemical in the Thetford. I thought the whole point was that they were chemical free.

We have a spray bottle we keep next to the loo and occasionally spray a mix of the pink fluid into the bowl. We do this partly for hygiene and partly to lubricate the blade.;)

Yes we have one and would recommend it to anyone. Easy enough to fit and yes, you could build something yourself but it's not worth the bother. No chemical means no chemical smell, no problem dumping and of course it's cheaper. The other advantage is that you can dump anytime without feeling you've wasted chemical because it's only half full...

We live in our van so the loo is used for every purpose.

The fan runs the whole time the blade is open so we use it in two ways for No:2s

Line bowl with paper, use and then swill away with flush. Wild camping mode to conserve water.

put some water in bowl, use and flush.

We do not leave the blade open (therefore fan working at anytime) while we use it.

We do not suffer from bad smells from the loo. An air freshener keeps the room smelling ok. The Carbon Filter takes care of the rest. Empty every two or three days.

Fitted a SOG on the last van we had & we were pleased with it. On our current van it has a Thetford C 250 toilet which has a 'ventilator' + carbon filter that vents out under the van fitted. It is exactly the same principle as the SOG. The only difference is the fan stays on for longer as it is operated by a press of the flush button & stays on for about 5 mins. It does the same as the SOG in keeping any smells out of the van & in my opinion breaks down the solid waste quicker than the SOG used to.
