So.....No Sleeping, Cooking, Signs

I am losing the will to live with the other thread.

Is there a general conclusion on these signs that they should be politely ignored as they have no legal enforceability. Not take to task councils that have them on a let sleeping dogs lie basis.

If one is ticketed ignore it or challenge it?

Most times I find a place without a sign. Don't park next to one. Beware clampers, official council and police signs. If you do get a ticket make sure its a proper fixed penalty notice and even if it is check that they have the byelaw and correct signage to back it up.

i think it's quite clear.all sides of the debate are correct, which means i'll have to make my own decisions dependant on the circumstances.which is fine

hi best not park where you see no camping . if you do get a ticket pay up and smile. you know it makes sense .
as for cooking and sleeping let the council publicaly flogg you . and pay the fine.
some will always be yes sir no sir people. please can i have a crumb from your dinner sir .

Surely, for 'no sleeping', they have to prove you're in there anyway. If they knock and you don't reply, they can't just assume you're sleeping. If they knock and you DO reply... then you're CLEARLY not sleeping! In the summer, I parked one night on the seafront at Southwold, of all places. Prime position, in a town where I was later informed they routinely round up motorhomers and send them to the gulag. I parked up at 8, then went into town, returning at about 10. I then went straight to bed. In the morning, I had a shower and breakfast, and was on the move again by 10. It was only when I drove away that I saw the 'no overnight camping' sign on a nearby lamp post. I got away with it. But what would anyone have had to complain about during my stay? Nothing. Supposing I'd been visiting friends on the seafront and had stayed in their place instead of the van, and the van was just parked there. Surely, what I said earlier applies. If they knock and there's no answer, they can't just assume.

I tend to park somewhere neutrally to do my cooking. I then quite often leave it until late in the evening/after dark to drive to where I'm going to stop over, then go straight to bed.

'No sleeping or cooking' is, to my mind, just code for 'no campers or motorhomes'... so why don't they bloody say that?

As for 'no camping'... wtf does that mean, anyway? I'm not pitching a tent, and I don't have a caravan taking up an extra space. I have a small motorhome, which I might choose to kip in as I would a car. Is that 'camping'?

hi, i wild camped all summer and never had any probs whatsoever, infact i stayed 1 night in Solva and the guy tapped the window in the morning asking if we had had a good kip, and as it was 9 am he would have to start a parking charge as at 9,30, he was a splendid guy and not stroppy or beaurocratic at all, really nice chap, we paid for 4 hrs parking and enjoyed Solva immensely, not all parking attendants are nasty, just most!!!!!

We arrived at Dover Marine parade at 5.45pm just getting the coffee on and there was a bang on the door ,the traffic warden was standing there with her not so happy face on ,we never realized that you parked free from 6pm . So she marched us to the ticket machine and made us buy a parking ticket by this time it was 5.55pm ummm what could we say .. we just said ok not wanting to rile her any more than she was lol... at least she did`nt give us a ticket, which surprised me as she was really stroppy about it ...At least we know now to buy a ticket if its before 6pm.We do usually go to the Canterbury Aire as we use the tunnel... Happy days..

That is typical of these jobsworth. It is free form 18:00 to 09:00. But to consol you, you would have noticed that any time left over from the previous day will be carried over to the following day. For example, if you clocked on at 17:55, your ticket would have been valid until 09:55 the following morning. I don't know if this method is programmed in at Dover, it is programmed in most parking spots in Cornwall. I stand corrected if I am wrong.

I think that was fair enough ...parking within a pay period...you pay
the warden broke the rules to let you off , a jobsworth would have just slapped a penalty notice under your wipers

Sorry but I don`t think I said it was,nt fair, as I know it was before 6pm We never thought of the time when we arrived. We were pleased she did`nt give us a ticket and we were very nice to her as well.

Agreed, we all have a responsibility to nip out and check the signs and, let's face it, most places charge during the day and I always assume that there will be a charge, which must be safer than assuming there isn't. As you said, a real jobsworth would have simply issued a ticket. Another factor is that the warden had no idea how long you'd been there. She may only visit each street every couple of hours and for all she knew he might have been there an hour.

I don't think that she was being unreasonable. I've overnighted there myself and it's a brilliant facility and I'd hate to lose it by it being abused. Not of course that the person in question was abusing it. There's no doubt that his lapse wasn't intentional and that he wasn't trying it on. I'm sure that there are people though who will roll up at 1730 and take a chance that no warden comes along!

There is a big difference between parking and camping. Park a motorhome, no problem. Leave a step outside and you're camping.

I'm okay, then. I never use the step. I'm 6' 5", so it's not a problem! ;)
