Snow fans? Scotland?

Is there many Skiiers or Snowboarders amongst our ranks?

Im a snowboarder looking for more frequent snow rather than one week abroad each year. Im trying to get some info on where to park the 'home' at any of the Scottish snow resorts? Its a 2/4 berth Swift so nothing massive!:D Aviemore, Cairngorm or the Nevis area.

-Does anyone make weekend trips in the winter and if so where do they stay?
-Sites or Wild?
-Closest to the ski lifts?

I have never been to Scotland full stop so its all about the research for me right now.

I did a search through loads of threads and it got quite confusing the information over a number of threads so forgive me if you are repeating yourself.

Muchos Gracias

Mike

There are two massive car parks at Glenshee, for skiers, right at the foot of the lifts. I haven't seen any No Overnight signs - but if you are going for the skiing, you'll be a customer during the day, and presumably they won't have so many motorhomers that they'd be full in the evening when all the skiers leave anyway. You can also park in the public car park at Braemar, about 5 miles maybe from the slopes if you want some civilisation (but don't eat at the Fife Arms hotel, it's never been very good on the occasions we have gone there).

Cheers guys some good info there! keep it coming:D

Ideal that carpark at the foot of the lifts by the sounds of it!

At Cairngorm Mountain, if you drive past Glenmore camp site towards the ski centre the road starts to climb and becomes twisty. On the left is a lovely car park area sheltered among pine trees. You'll see several wilders in there when the snow's falling.

spot on about Glenshee, 2 very large carparks right in the middle of the ski area, as mentioned no NOC signs and I think the assumption above is correct as a paying customer they shouldn't have any complaint providing you're not parked up in the middle making things awkward for them...

the only thing I could see they might be uncomfortable with is if there is heavy snow fall forecast and you could end up getting cut off.

again decent sized car park at the glencoe ski area, same idea as above I imagine, better range of hotels etc in glencoe as well, the clachaig being well known and liked. campsites a plenty, the red squirrel is basic but cheap and a short walk to the pub :)

aviemore, couple of decent campsites in and around the town itself and a few wild opportunities between there and the ski area, again large carparks on the mountain,

I've never skied the cairngorms but aviemore is much more suited to young 'uns, depends on what you like really....

may be worth a few phone calls, I'm very interested in this as glenshee is about an hour's drive from me but would be good to take the bus for an over night or 2 :)

Wow some excellent info. For me it would most likely be last minute weekend trips that are triggered by snow conditions. So booking ahead in campsites wont be ideal. First i need to beef up or double up our leisure battery combo to ensure a comfortable wild stay in the colder temps.

Which resort is best for an Intermediate Snowboarder?

-Glenshee has the longest distance of runs available in one location.
-Cairngorm builds a snowpark with half pipe etc, again when conditions allow but can get very busy at the weekends (carparks can be full ie you will get turned away) as early as 10am.
-Glencoe is can be very affected by the weather as access to the ski area is by chair but on a good day provides some amazing riding/skiing.
Lecht, never been but whilst as the crow flies it's not that far from the other centres it is a real pain to get to.

I would suggest if you can, try them all as they are very different in character :)

Cheers for the info, seems to me i need to try them all so as per your list it looks like i shall set the target to Glenshee and take it from there!

Now all we need is snow!

you better believe it! counting the days, bought me a new set of carvers last winter and managed to get out on them once and when I did my downhill skis would have been better

on a cheery note 1st frost this morning (in Dundee) which is quite early so fingers well and truly crossed.

Have stayed in the Glenshee car park overnight a few years ago - was fine. The car parks at ski areas tend to be checked last thing in the evening to make sure no-one is still stuck up on the hill...so you might get someone check if you're OK. We asked if we could stay over - no problem. If heavy falls are forecast, the police might suggest you leave for lower altitudes...but if you've got independent heating and supplies for a few days, you'll prob be OK!

Between Glenshee and Braemar is a wilder area near the river where some folk used to pitch up in better weather...on the left as you head down.

Glencoe is a great ski area and so is Nevis Range. I've seen campervans tucked into the right hand side of the Nevis Range car park.

Good luck - maybe see you up there!:D
