Morning all
Anyone used any snow chains on a ford transit mk7 2011 with 215/75/16 tyres on? I've researched but most say they will foul suspension etc. and the only ones that appear to be ok are £££'s. They're only for a "just in case" scenario for our mid February break in the Cairngorms.

Cheers

Colin.

Just take a look at how close the tyre is to the front strut, there is little space. Maybe snosocks would suffice?

I did think of those, but mixed reviews, in that most have said they're single use as they fall apart, and at around £60🤔. Maybe that's all I can use🤷

I’m sure you’ll be fine without chains. The mountain roads and main roads are kept clear as the snow sports depend on punters getting there and if there are any roads bad enough to require chains they will be closed. Drive to conditions and a you won’t need to spend money on something you’re probably never going to use.

An alternative might be winter tyres - however it may be a significant investment for just one trip. We do have them on our vehicles and come March the local tyre place will swap them back to the regular tyres. A downside is having space to store the tyres that aren't in-use though.

This arrangement is mandatory in some European countries - e.g. Germany although I suspect they're better setup to handle it there where there are "tyre hotels" if you are short of space at home.

I'd be surprised if you have a problem come mid-Feb though.

SNOW SOCKS VS SNOW CHAINS | Traction test & brake test

with socks you'd get a smoother ride and I imagine easier to fit and could go onto tarmac briefly, chains would I think be better on really bad conditions

Thanks to everyone for the input. Snow socks seem the only viable option for us, but with the price for the only make I can find that will fit our van being £80 for a pair, were going to take a chance (and as shovel😁). As some of you have said, the roads wil probably have been kept clear anyway so🤞.

Thanks again all.

Colin. 🙂👍

I hope your taking your bike as there’s some awesome trails in the area.
Sadly not this time as we need to put a massive back rack and box on the back for our bits and bobs that won't fit in the van. We will be doing so in future trips though. 🙂👍

Thanks Pudsey. Yes I've seen these and others but none have my tyre size (215/75/16) and it seems if you don't get the right size, too small and you probably won't get them on, too big and you'll probably damage them immediately 🤷

A little cheaper, but still not barking money, and cheaper than a paint job if you slide into something.
