Bought our MH last Feb. smoke alarm has never worked, tried replacing batter
ies no joy , needs replacing completely, can anyone suggest the best type to buy as there seem to be different sorts. Will probably have a separate co detector as well so might be useful to know which of these to buy. MH is a 10 year old Autotrail Scout. with a bit of luck p'raps we'll be given one as a Christmas present!:lol-053:

i remember reading somehthing about this a while back, thye said that specific units should be used for motorhomes. whether or not this is actually true or not i haven't seen anything to prove either way. i however have bought a dual smoke/co from sainsbury's £20.00. think they've since gone up to 25.00
sorry can't be more factual, i guess someone will tell us soon if i've done wrong by buying one. but thats what i've done

I spoke to the firebrigade and the H&S officer at Sheff CC, they both said as long as you read instructions and place equipment as it says then theres no problem installing any good brand, i think thats a savvy buy my co was £20 :rolleyes2:

Got a combined smoke/ co alarm in costco for around £17.

All good advice on here so far.

I'd always advise buying a good brand such as "Kidde". (You are trusting it with your life after all)

Make sure it has a "hush" or "silence" button, as you can press this to silence it for a few minutes if it activates due to burned toast or cooking fumes. This saves anyone from being tempted to remove the battery to avoid false alarms when cooking.....then finding that the battery is still disconnected later when there is a genuine fire (as has happened too often!). It's probably better to buy one with a sealed, tamperproof, ten year battery.

You could also buy the type with a built-in light, to light your escape route at night.

Make sure you fit it at the highest point of the room to give you the earliest warning, as this is where smoke will collect first.

Whichever type you fit, remember to test it weekly and change the battery at least once per year (unless it has a sealed long-life battery of course).

The "Fire Angel" range have a "toast proof" detector which is ideal for MH. Last I saw them was in B &Q

Ours always goes off when toasting....:(
Recently in the cold weather it sometimes goes off while parked up at home....:(
No appliances on....
Got the battery out at the moment, but it will be refitted when we next use our camper....

In my limited experience, smoke detectors using a photoelectric system are less prone to cooking alarms than are the ionisation type.

You might also be able to get one with a preemptive hush button that you can push to give you several minutes deactivated before starting the toast

Thanks to everyone for all the information on smoke alarms, think I shall go for the combined smoke and CO one , it will be on the Christmas list straight away , won't be going anywhere until after Christmas so will have it in place for the next trip out.
Thanks again and Merry Christmas to you all.:)

Received our Christmas present of the Kidde combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarm thanks to kind son , have just decided to fit it in readyness for our next trip , but on reading the user guide it states that quote"It is not designed for use in a caravan or boat" just wondering if this applies to motorhomes as well and why this might be, as you have fitted one in your van Phil what are your thoughts on this?

Thanks Chris

I bought one of these Kidde devices some while ago, and noted the advice about usage.

However, I chose to ignore it on the basis that whilst it might not be the ideal choice, it's a darn sight better than no alarm at all provided you site it sensibly.

I fitted it in the same place as Elddis originally fitted the smoke alarm - above the dinette area in the centre of the 'van.

Regards

Chris
