thinking of getting a smartphone to surf while out in the camper anyone use one can give feedback please, especially good or bad about "3" as they offer the best package.

looking at either a samsung galay S or HTC Desire phone just cannot make up my mind on the phones.

HTC Desire on 3 recommended

I've got a HTC Desire on 3. Got to admit it's probably the best smartphone I've had (and I've had a few).

I'd prefer a hardware keyboard, but you soon get used to the on-screen keyboard.
Battery life is not brilliant, especially if you use the GPS / Sat-Nav a lot. So make sure you get a car-charger for it.

Re: network coverage, I think 3's got the best data coverage, and has a useful fall-back position that if there's no 3 coverage, then the phone will fall back to 2G data and voice on the Orange network (orange an 3 have a roaming agreement).

There's some good apps for Android, and when you get the v2.2 (froyo) upgrade to the Desire (3 sent this out a few weeks ago), then there's a built-in application to turn your Phone into a WiFi hotspot so you can share the connection with a laptop, iPod touch etc.

Highly recommended.

thanks just got the htc desire on "3" network now on charge as we read, awaits the connection too.

how do i update to version 2.2 or check which version i have, i am a complete novice to smartphones so may well have more questions like getting the free sat nav on it.

To check the version of software, goto menu, settings, about phone, software information.

Out of the box its probably still on version 2.1 , but the phone checks automagically for software updates, so I'd guess it'll tell you about the update at the next check. You can tell it to.go check for updates manually, there's a menu option to do that buried somewhere.

On v2.2 there's free navigation just there on the menu, can't remember if it was also there in v2.1 but either way you'll have the Google maps program on there.

Enjoy the phone, and keep your battery charger close. :)

is google maps sat nav anygood, are there any other free sat nav programs for android phones

Android v2.2 is not yet available on most locked HTC Desire phones, and that includes 3 ...

Shouldn't be far off though :)

thanks for the replies also stuck on checking auto backup when i goto settings as per manual there is no privacy option to tap on, anyone put me right please.
