small vs large

I was driving (at work) today when I saw the largest 2 axle MH I have ever seen pull out off as side street.....got me wondering.....why?!

I love my compact.....big enough to have everything i need, small enough to find a parking space in Asda usually.

Why do you have a small or large MH?

I guess there's a trade of between having enough of what you want/need and the size of your van. For some people a r&r bed is enough for others an island bed and separate shower are essential. Personally I think it is all a compromise, we wanted to be able to get out of bed in the middle of the night, if need be, without having to go outside, but wanted something not too big (up to 6m). So our compromise is an A class Hymer, drop down bed so don't have to make it up every night, but one of us has to climb over the other if we want to get up (guess who that is?).

Mine is 7.5m long...............no that would be bragging:lol-049:not to say uncomfortable!

Our motorhome is 7.5m long with a garage (bed over). I am disabled and the garage gives us room for my hand cycle attached to a wheelchair for when i need it. To get the garage you need to but a bigger m/h, and that normally means that the other comfortable bits come as well.
Sometimes i wish that we had a smaller van - there are places (not many) that we can't go - parking issues etc. Also some of the WC Poi's are not large enough - that is not a moan, just a fact of life - it is fun finding some of these places though............

At the end of the day it is all down to personal choice or necessity IMHO, and we are all wanting similar things from our way of life - peace and quiet, beautiful scenery........................before i start waxing lyrical (not normal for me) I shall stop.........

Enjoy WC whatever size van you have:have fun:

hi .small is fineif staying local or just a few weeks away. after 6-9 months on a tour you can get fed up with making beds getting things out from lockers before you put up the table etc. plus there are things you want to take that you like be it toys .food or washing machines . having toured africa in a vw t2 camper a few times i realised i wanted more space and a m,bike with me . i changed 12 yrs ago to my truck . best move i ever made. but i do have a bongo and teardrop here very handy for that local two day break. luckily have had the teardrop 20yrs so its handy . but if you do ever get the chance to long term you may find a bit more space usefull. plus you may want to take some toys with you bikes .diving gear, etc .

We have had to trade up to a larger 7m home due to my partners disability having found that our T25 just to confining for over night stops. Its horses for courses some people like to have it large and some small

When we use our van, we are but three persons, however, I bought a 6 berth van.
It all stems from our caravan days, our current motorhome six berth arrangement entails a large seating area / bed at the back of the van, a 4 seat dinette / double bed in the middle, and an overcab double bed at the front.
This means that my son has his own 'pit' (if you understand teenagers) which can be curtained off during the day to hide the mess, the back of the van could be left made up as a bed if we so wish (but 'er indoors likes the 'jigsaw' puzzle that basildog mentioned), which leaves the dining area a 'clear' area for relaxing, eating, reading etc.
Our van is also 7.5m long, and once my son (13yrs) stops coming with us we will want to downsize, hopefully to a fixed bed set up though!

as the family grew,so did the vans, started with a motorbike combo,i built the chair of course, and the biggest was a single decker bus with the rear half of the roof raised a metre to make a second storey, and even that was tight,4 kids is 4 bikes,4body boards 4 lots of toys, all my tools ,a 175 0n the back and a mobylette on the front, gas bottles for different countries,2extra spare wheels, wood for the burner, sewing machine,300 litres of water in tanks and some in containers, big genny for welding roof racks on the beach etc, small one for charging or small power tools, enough rope to knock up a swing or adventure playground if we stopped for more than a day, market stall and stock. i'll stop now but you get the idea. got a lt35 now which i find small and nippy and quite happy to use it as a car

Strewth!

small is beautiful-for me

Mine is just under 12' but has everything we need for my daughter and I plus two small dogs. It's very basic but then there's less to go wrong and I can use it everyday and park in London where we live. I suppose everyone's needs are different but for me,my little tardis is perfect.:D

I think it is generally accepted that there is no 'best' size large or small....it's entirely about you...where you want to go...how cheaply or not you want to do it....and what comfort level and what inconvienience you want to put up with or not.

and if you definitely want a 'bathroom' in a T2 type of Campervan then you are at least looking at a space compromise and a pop up roof to be able to use it.

well i have progressed as i have got older 20+ years ago it was what i could carry on my back (ex army) and motorbikes since 1977, i have had my self build camper (vwt4) for 4years and i love it, i have the basics rr bed, and a fridge and a heater what more do i need ?? my brother has allways had very big motorhomes with all the buttons and whistles but i go every where he does and much more, plus i have mpg to die for, it has been said before but one mans meat is another mans poison ;)

Is that your compact in you avatar?

'er indoors said oooh that's nice, and new! er....no! second hand, 2009, and 180 grand!!!
Still it has got 12 gears!!!:scared:

Current van is biggest we have ever had, but still only 6.35m. It does 30mpg, carries 9, with berths for 5, yet still fits in most car park spaces. The larger size makes for great visibility with your eyeline 6' above ground so you can see over traffic & hedges. No point expecting to drive fast or cover long m-way distances, but no problem, we can take in a few extra stops as we are retired & have no need to worry about leave allowances.

We are only 2 but I like the ability to leave berths made up & still use the dinette. It has loads of eqt so we are fully self sufficient for days at a time, even if it rains for a week. My Mum & Dad had a Ford Suntour Siesta 2-berth (based on the 5cwt Escort van) & we had a Commer Wanderer with solid poptop when the kids were little, so we have seen small too. In addition, we can take the twin g-kids if we want without problems.

I have other cars for fun & transport, but this is solely for fun days out & trips away, plus we lend it to the children too.

We are in the dilemma stage at the moment. We have been travelling since March in SB merc green sprinter. It would be lovely to have bed already made up - but the downside would be the areas we can't get to or sneakily stay down here in STh France. Everywhere you look there are no camper signs. Luckily we still look like a Merc Van & have only been moved on once. (that was when another couple of "proper" campers were near, and we all got moved. We have been toying with the idea of another self build but with a different layout, or a conventional camper with a permanent bed.
