Sleepyspots: M1 / M18?

Hi, just wondering if anyone can point us in the direction of any nice sleepyspots that we could use to break journeys north-south and back again, within a few miles of the M18 / M1 (Doncaster, Sheffield, Chesterfield, Worksop, Mansfield, Derby, Nottingham areas).

We're looking for picnic areas with a bit of greenery, rather than service stations and are happy to drive for a few miles when we come off the motorway in order to get to a nice spot.

Very grateful for any info.

if you fancy the time there is matlock or cromford, cannot get nicer than cromford the car park also the canal just check the posts on matlock meet earlier this year

Thanks for the pointers Mandrake, I couldn't find the posts about the Matlock meet but had a look in the Derbyshire section and found stuff on Cromford and Matlock. The Matlock posts seem to be about station car parks, was that what you had in mind? Cromford Canal basin sounds interesting.

Thanks for the replies so far. Does anyone know of anywhere at the other end of the "corridor", i.e. Doncaster / Sheffield?

It would be handy to have somewhere in mind for that area, for the weekends when we're setting out on Friday after work and only want to drive for a couple of hours before resting up for the night.

Tony

P.s. I looked in the Yorkshire section on here but didn't find anything for this area.

there is a good place on the a614 out side the main gate of clumber park which is just off the a1 near worksop.

there are a couple of nice looking places in the village of wentbridge also a very nice pub that provides nice beer and food you may be able to park in the car park after a meal and a drink

at junction 1 on the m18 is the hellerby ind est on there is a good truck stop for food and a drink then stop on the estate

Thanks for the replies. The Wentbridge info. sounds good. Gordon, wouldn't that be a busy / noisy road to be trying to sleep alongside of, or is the spot that you mention set back a good distance from the traffic?

Tony

hi tonyfu the parking area is set back from the road and is quiet and surounded by trees

spot near m1 / m18 clumber park ,wentbridge ? these spots seem well off route:confused:

i think tonyfu was after some spots off the a1 thats why i mentioned wentbridge

Very happy with all the suggestions I've been given so far. We'll be trying them out over the next few months when travelling south from Tyneside, and then home again. It'll make things a lot easier for us. We're happy to travel a few miles off the main route if it means we get to a nice quiet spot with some trees, scenery or views etc.

Thanks again

Tony :)

Not really wild camping but a nice site

:):) Hi there, I've just bought a MH and am new to the forum so not really done any wild camping in the MH yet.

2 Weeks ago went to meet some friends and stayed on

Greensprings Touring Caravan Park. Rockley Abbey Farm Rockley Lane Worsbrough Barnsley South Yorkshire S75 3DS, Tel: 01226 288298

It's just off the M1 and ideal for an ovenight if you can't wild camp.

Thanks for the info. and the link to the map. Unfortunately it's on that section of the M1 that we don't use when going north / south from Tyneside as we go A1/M18/M1 and vice versa.

If you hadn't put the link to the map it would've taken me a lot longer to work that out, so thanks again for making things easy for me.

Hope you have loads of fun with your new motorhome and that you check out the Northumberland Coast in it some time.

Tony :)
