A up all,my wife and i have been visiting the isle of skye for some time but now having exhausted all the camp site need to find sites that are off the beaton track in a20 foot motorhome ,Can anyone shed any light
All the best STYDER1
Why not stay at Glenelg, opposite Skye, on the Sound of Sleat? Great wild camping on the beach there but I think the small ferry across to Skye stops running at the end of October. Have a look at our holiday there:
Wouldn't try tonight! Sitting typing with a howling gale which has just blown over my 56lbs. dog.
Depends what you are looking for and where on Skye. Parts of the old road exist near Sligachan and on the Dunvegan road. Parts also exist on the section near Edinbane.
Uig to Staffin over the Quirang can cope with a 20footer, though best from the Uig side and areas exist on that road.
North of Portree there are areas towards Duntulm....
On the way to the bridge from Nostie turn up the A890 and at the top of the rise on the right is a carpark with superb views.
Glenelg - Kyleherea ferry with a 20 footer might not be a good idea as the road up to Broadford past Sgurr na Coinnich is narrow
Just finished our first trip in our new motorhome which included Skye. I can confirm the weather report as we were camped in a lay-by just short of Dunvegan Castle all night. We had stopped before Dunvegan but I was convinced that the strength of the winds would maybe have been able to blow the van over. Left Skye early because of the weather but will return at a later date. Weather the previous 2 nights was great at Culloden Moor and at another wild camp site between Laide and Aultbea.
And I live a few miles down the road, so I can sympathise...despite a stone structure.
Had an extension added about 4 years ago...Building Control insisted my windows overlooking Loch Bracadale had to be certified to withstand gusts of 110mph.

I do sympathise with you about the cost of Diesel, then again I went into Morrison's supermarket in Ullapool and got a bottle of Whyte and MacKay's whisky for £8.99.
I couldn't get it for that anywhere in Glasgow.
