I have a Sky digibox (240v) and dish which I will use for free to air channels on the odd occasion when I hook up or use a genny.

My question is this: Can I take the card out of my home digibox, take it with me and use it in the other one, therefore getting sky in the van.

Yes you can but you won't get all the channels you do at home.

Usually, it's the movie channels that, when you try, say something like "this Sky Viewing Card is not compatable", or something similar. But you should be ok for mostly all other channels.

:rolleyes::rolleyes:... just need a van now eh...:eek:

regards :D

Technically, I still own an Elddis Autoquest but should have had the next one by now. It failed its test on the handbrake and they are waiting for parts.

I do not mind the delay because, ahum, the money has not come through yet to complete the purchase. My supplier in Colombia has not laundered the money yet.

Hopefully the big`un will be on the road early next week. You show me a better dog kennel than the Burstner and I will eat my hat (if I had one)

your card will not work as a long term solution in the "wrong" box, the card needs to be bonded to the box.... you can get a free sat viewing card from sky for £20 which will give you all the free to air channels....

Every sky card is "married" to one sky box so to get the same channels you have at home you have to take your home box, I have a multi room subscription and take my second box with me. As a term of your Sky subscription the box(es) have to be kept linked to a land line, but talking to a Sky engineer pal he said if you're only going away for a week or two it's not really a problem as the Sky box uses the phone line for a "Call Back" to keep Sky informed it's in the house, if it's been disconnected and a call back has been requested the box will automatically do it as soon as it's re-connected to your land line.
hope that's been some help :)

I did not accept the Sky terms re phoneline and they sold it to me anyway without a problem but I bought my box outright (£150) then took a package, the new sky plus boxes need a phone line to work I believe.

what exactly is the current position re the card required to get the free to view channels which are encrypted ?
some years ago I invested the £20 to get a sky card to decrypt these channels [ got a feeling it was channel 4 and channel 5 ] ; now , of course , there are extra channel 4 and 5 programmes , 5 US etc , are they encrypted ?

and with the new cards being issued to people who choose to subscribe to sky , will my card continue to work ?

if not , will new cards be available ?

I have just got off the phone with Sky technical dept.

The info by 888dee and carlsenior is spot on (thanks lads)

If I register my 2nd box to get the same sky progs, it will double my monthly payments.

Freesat or multi room is better for cost.

By the way, the guy said the phone call back (to check up) is monthly.

All of the sky contact numbers have changed.

The tech. dept. is 08442 410102

Freesat is 08442 411602

Sales (for multi room) is 08442 414243

If you have 2 boxes and one card, you have to inform sky every time you swop the card over. I think that is how he said it works but if I was a techno geek, I would not have asked the question in the first place.

In your case lebesset, I would phone the tech number above.

Thanks for the help.

I too took one of the sky boxes from my home with me on a 2-month trip to France this year. I understand that you are not supposed to do this but I had no problem whatsoever. It is of a course 230v device so when I was plugged into main electricity I was able to use it, otherwise I simply changed the cables over to the fre-to-air box.

This one has`nt got one as far as I can see, just a Status (round) aerial. I am not bothered as I have amassed aerials the way Imelda Marcos amassed shoes.

Now you mention it, there is a big hole in the roof.

I also am not happy with the phoneline requirement as i presently have a FTA box so only need a card for RTE TV3 Etc. but they will not sell me one saying I have to pay €50 for installation of a dish that is up already!!! They can stick it as far as I am concerned.

Do they not realise that RTE Etc is FTA elsewhere.

I see thay are making more money out of you as 0844 numbers are higher than normal call rates .

My box in the truck is a 12v pace one - no need for 240v and i've never had problems getting a service, just less channels.
