Skating ?

Belgian

Guest
Temperature was below 0 here the last weeks,
So there was natural ice on ponds and canals.
Why not skating after that many years ? :confused:
We did, took the grandchildren with us, (4 and 2 1/2 years young).
Grandpa digged out his skates (for the 1st time in 30 years). Yes, they where a bit rusty, but the shoes (altough old modish) still fits. :p
Grandchildren couldn't skate; grandpa thought he still could. He could, only landed on his bump more than usual (pretext: the skates were rusty and blunt).:eek:
Happy home now; only sitting on a cushion.:rolleyes: Glad there are no photo's: batteries went down.:p (and grandpa too).
Skating hype is going around over here; maybe this weekend the 'Zwinsteden-tocht' from Bruges to Sluis. I skip for the '11-steden tocht in Friesland' - 200 km is a little bit too far-and I have a soar ass.:eek:
Global warming-up ? my ass :rolleyes::D

Hope you went on the ice first to check the ice was safe Grandpa:eek::p, or should I say "Torvill";):p

Ah bliss! Remember when our kids were wee...daddy went round the pond with a hammer and a 9inch nail to check the ice, 2 littl'uns following behind wit eyes like saucers, waiting for dad to fall through the ice!...we used to skate a lot on lakes and lochs and ponds. Don't even know where the skates are now. Thanks for reviving some great memories and sharing your trip belgian!:)

skating on frozen lakes or ponds or canals is so utterly stupid :eek: how many times do you see and hear from the emergency services of people drowning why do it, also why risk the lives of our emergency personnel. i am sorry if this annoys some but come on act your age FALL THROUGH ICE 99.9% DEATH you do not come back up where you fell through

It was quiet safe and permited, ice is now more than 12cm thick here;:eek: it was only 12 years ago this happened before ! Be glad you escaped the Ice-age in the UK :D Grandchildren never saw that much ice before; and yes it seems earth should be warming up (I'm not a believer):cool:

Yup, totally agree...hence the care with the hammer test...unless it was at least 7" thick all over we wouldn't go on it (and it was only 2-3 feet deep anyway)...but you do get a lot of idiots going onto big areas of deep water with no idea how dangerous it is, hence Derwntwater last week. You see folk throwing sticks onto the ice for dogs too - madness! When I was a kid the winters were a helluva lot colder, so the ponds froze absolutely solid for weeks on end. Now i think its a lot dodgier. So - stay off the ice!:eek::eek:

it may be me that sees the danger but , no pond or lake freezes the same thickness all over what a lot of people dont realize that even the small still waters have an undercurrent, and as such the ice is not of a uniform thickness. hence one area may be able to take one persons weight but a few inches further on it may not, even two or three feet of water will kill especially when at close to freezing ie hypothermia .lack of oxygen will kill after 4 mins its up to the individual but if you want to skate then use a rink. when i was 9 a freind of ours fell through ice on a local pond we used to fish and enjoy ourselves on we could see him and watched him drown it took a long time to recover his body but enjoy your skating on ponds after all it only you or your loved ones that may die think about it .

I am sure that Belgian is well aware of the dangers, but also the joy of using a natural nature given feature with the correct degree of caution and preparation. Hi is now heroic in the eyes of his grandchildren and they bring him hot toddies with looks of adulation as he sits with smarting buttocks on his plump goose down cushions. ;)

Here we go
