Is there any thing to apply to silver screens to waterproof / prolong the life of them. Mine are fine but I was wondering if there is any thing to help keep them this way.

Hi witzend,

Don't use them like me,I have moved them for the last three months from the back to the front floor well, but may have to use them on the way up country.

I don't think so, they are not like tents material are they, I use mine (different ones every time I change the camper lol ) all the time summer and winter, even though my van now is equipped with internal blinds all round, but I do use my camper/motorhome all year round. its rarely left on the drive for more then 2/3 weeks at the time.:dog::dog::dog::dog::dog::dog::dog::dog::dog::dog::dog::dog:

nikwax

You could try nikwax as it's suitable for a whole host of materials including suade (spelling ) and sheepskin.

Don't use external unless you have to and don't put them away wet. Always amazes me how many folk seem to use them all year around. We have a cheap internal one to keep it cool in the summer which we often use as insurance at night just in case the temp drops a bit more than expected. Its rubbish at preventing condensation but does seem to help with insulating the windscreen. If it goes a bit mouldy we can just chuck it out and we have a good excuse to go to one of the Warner shows to get another one. :)

A bit like this one Car Van Windscreen Metallic Reflective Sunshade Thermal Inner Screen Cover - G | eBay Ours is a little bigger and more suction caps to attach it.

Just seen what they are asking for external ones. £150 ??? ours which are good quality, where less than half that.

Also if you are wilding and need to move in a hurry, you can just rip it down. Never done so but nice to be prepared.

We have 2 Silver Screens Silver Screens the original and best Motorhome cab window insulation ! 1 that is a solid screen and 1 that has a drop down panel.

The solid one we`ve had for 10 years and the other one we`ve had for 8 years, before them we had awful condensation problems.

Both are still in good condition apart from a little bit of crazing / cracking of the silver covering on the outside.

The only problem we`ve had is one of the ties to the door handle came off, unbelievable wind in Scotland a couple of years back ..... LOL

The wife sewed it back on and at the same time went over the other ones as well.

If you have to put them away wet / damp just make sure you dry / air them at the first opportunity.

When we get home after each trip i also give them a quick wipe down to keep them clean.

They are not cheap, but in my humble opinion they are worth it.

P.S.

I`ve never used any sprays / coatings or anything like that, just wipe them with clean water.

Thanks for reply's I do use then overnight all the time even when parked on my drive at home mainly to stop condensation but they are excellent insulation as well. The internal that I had didn't help with condensation at all nor do the sliding blinds fitted by the manufacturer. With the internal I couldn't have ripped them down and driven off quickly as I would have to wipe the condensation off first in most cases. Taylormade Screen Covers External Windscreen Covers

I used to have external silver screens on my Transit minibus, they were second hand when I bought them, i used them for 3years and they were still going strong when I sold them on after getting rid of the van. When I bought them they smelled of campfires but were waterproof and worked really well and we hardly ever had condensation(on the windscreen), I always tried to dry them of naturally before I packed them away. Because it was a minibus I made internal screens for all the other windows out of this fabric Rainbow Conversions - thermal screens for your motorhome, motorcaravan and campervan converson which worked very well to insulate but these windows did tend to collect condensation.

I dont think you need to treat external screens with anything because my experience of them is that they are pretty tough.

Now I have a coachbuilt I have remade the old internal screens to fit this windscreen and I use them all year round to block out extra light as well as for insulation and hardly get any condensation(except when it is particularly cold or damp outside), these are made of waterproof vinyl type stuff on one side and a thick plastic foil type stuff on the other and never seem to go mouldy or anything.

We have fitted internal screens now. In the past we bought external ones, but soon adapted them for internal use by fitting suckers on to them. It is a lot easier to take them off in the morning, don't have to leave the van to go out in the wet or cold and no wet screens to store.

We have always used them all year round, they are effective in hot or cold weather.

I stopped using my silver screen now,
Just too much hassle to put it on and takes it off covered in snow and ice , then have to store it away wet, and when I get to the next stop it is always wet , cold to put on.
Yes, I get condensation in the inside of my screen , I bought a devise from Lidl when it was on offer that sucks up the condensation in a couple of minutes. No hassle , much easier
Anyone wants to buy an A class silver screen? Any offer consider.

I like to use my internal ones all year round because they block out all the light at night, I find the curtains dont cut out enough and I am sometimes disturbed by the early morning sun or car headlights

Ditto, bought a set for my Ducato from a forum member. Eliminated the condensation completely, if wet I just dry them off then lay over the table.
Would advise anyone to invest in them especially if out and about in the colder months.

Do you have any more information on where I could get something like this for when I eventually get to warmer climes
