Should we be telling others where we park ?

Should we really be telling others where we park overnight. I know we have a POI file with locations but with more MH's on the road it looks like some places are getting very popular. Trouble is you think that this is a good place to put your latest find but someone else sees it who could not care less and before you know it, its been added to another open forum. We always get the newbie and the first post is usually where can I park for FREE for two weeks and someone will make a suggestion.

Perhaps its time to keep our POI's to ourselves.

One we used to like that I have never put on the internet has found its way onto one of the sites and now has NO OVERNIGHT PARKING signs up.

If we don’t share then there is no point in the wildcamping forum and poi’s.
All the poi’s in the app have come from other members sharing

Hi,

My bookmark toobar across the top of the screen has 8 other sites that freely give Pois to download so that I have several thousand parking spots throughout Europe to choose from, most of them free.

If motorhomers cannot get the information here then they will simply go elsewhere for it.

High time for a cull !

I would say now that every spot more or less is covered under apps freely available.

Think most of the stuff on poi’s are common knowledge there’s umpteen internet sites that duplicate most of these parking spots. If someone asks on here for a place or an area near where I live and have local knowledge of I don’t have a problem helping them out and expect the same in return.l agree it is annoying when you think you’re the only person on the planet who knows a certain spot and when you arrive there’s a French or Italian van parked it’s always been that way in my book. There’s more motorhomers who only used caravan sites in the past willing to give wilding a go because of caravan site prices and may have talked to others who recommended wild camping. I still have a few wee spots that I don’t advertise but if asked I’d willingly send a pm or tell someone I know. Is that not what it’s supposed to be about.

A bloke approached me last week with his wife, lovely couple asked me if I was overnighting and asked me a few questions. Mentioned this site and said he doesnt post locations on here anymore due to the very reason you raised.

He also said he mentioned to a MH person he was chatting to that he was parked at x y or z location. The next thing the chap he told had posted it on face book and he reckoned it ruined his fav place by always being "full" thereafter.

Happy to share but there’s no shortage of places to stop in Bonnie Scotland. There are a hand full of places where we have built up a relationship with land owner or Forest Ranger who have been good enough to let us wild camp and making them public would be stupid.

My own perception / opinion is members have always remained tight lipped on the special spots they find, not for selfish reasons per se but perhaps the location is sensitive and would be ruined if it were widely publicised and all in sundry where to visit

People do share gems but I think by PM to those they trust and had rapport with on the forum and to an extent human nature

Phil in the past has had to take legal action where people swoop and plaster all across other social media there is a intellectual copyright at stake.

The complexion of wild camping has changed whether here or elsewhere some don't contribute but want spoon feeding locations that others have found and the local intelligence that goes with it

Perhaps its just me but part of the fun is weedling out places to stop.

For me this situation has been created by the fact that whilst there are more Motorhomes than ever before there are less places to park them, particularly near urban locations that are popular.
There are thousands of rural pois not listed on here, where I live I could quite literally supply dozens of locations not listed on here, and I am sure many others on here could do likewise.

Attitudes have to change in the uk the no overnight parking signs have to be replaced by councils realising that we are not the enemy.

But I have no problem sharing my favourite spots on here, if everyone adopted the same attitude as the threads author, there would be no forums like this for us all to use and enjoy.

As you say Caledonia there are plenty of rural locations up here many not listed on here.
We are spoilt for choice with stunning locations everywhere.

But we have to be careful and not take this for granted, respect where we stay, and the people who live there. Unfortunately I have witnessed idiots behaving poorly with no concern for others, but seldom I have I witnessed this from fellow Motorhomers.

That is certainly true Andrew.

A few years ago I was allowed to overnight (for a small fee) in the Coach Park area of Druridge Bay Country Park. The Park Manager also allowed me to inform others of this facility (within reason). I realised that if I announced this as a POI, it would spread like wildfire on the internet and be overrun. What I ended up doing was informing WC members who attended the Meets at Druridge of the situation and asking them not to make it public. There were a couple of occasions when (well intentioned) WC members posted about overnighting in the Park and I had to get in touch with Phil to get the posts removed.

It is academic now as a local has got all overnighting stopped. I believe an official campsite will shortly be up and running there, it will be more costly and properly organised I suppose and there will be greedy motorhome owners who will moan about the cost.

Spot on mate.....
Personally I've never used the poi list on here or any other site for that matter...
Much happier with a map and Google earth and some on the ground research to find some fantastic gems.

The fewer locations shared means more motorhomes in fewer locations. The more locations we have means less concentration.

This community is about sharing.

When have you ever heard a motorhomer complain about cost? We all know they feel no price is too much to pay for a good pitch.
