I was given a Vodaphone dongle (without a sim) for use with a laptop, my thoughts are this, not always wanting to use a laptop could I use a female usb to phone adaptor and the dongle with a sim to get broadband as not always wanting to use 4G for internet especially whilst abroad?

I wouldn't think so the drivers on the dongle will be coded for window not safari ?

I doubt it too. I've got a couple of old Vodafone dongles that I used to rely on and both automatically loaded specific software to the laptop to enable connection... I wouldn't think it would be able to load to a phone. Mind you, times and technology have changed, so my experience could well be out of date. Worth googling for more info. I must say, little mifi units like the Huawei ones work a treat without any software required. I've just got back from 7 weeks in Europe and switched between a Huawei for my phone and other bits and a dedicated 3 sim in my iPad.

Just a quick heads-up... I bought a 24GB 3Trio sim for the iPad and discovered late on in the trip that 3 have a 'fair use policy' that restricts roaming usage to 13GB in Europe. After this, they start to charge something like 0.5p per MB, even if your SIM has more data on it. Even their helpdesk weren't clear on the rules, saying that the 13GB was based on a month of usage but they weren't at all sure if I could carry on with it on an extended trip. I just about made it within the limit (thanks to having the other sim in the mifi) but if I'd known about it, I'd have bought 2 x 12GB sims instead and activated them both before I left the UK.

If I understand correctly a MiFi device would be a better option

I understand that, it's just that I would only need the cost of a sim.I have already checked out all the contacts and such.

Which is why I have an unlocked dual sim Phablet. Any 3g data sim will
work in it, no dongle needed and can be tethered to. Likewise a data/phone
sim will work in it, but only one data connection at a time.

Probably wont work, not sure if the phone would recognise an external usb device.

If you have a mobile data sim, you can pop it into any old mobile phone handset., connect a usb cable into a laptop or PC and use the phone as a modem.
Select usb tether on the phone and away you go.

Or just use the phone as an internet access device.

A data only sim will work in a phone for internet only and can still be used for emergency calls. Most of us have an old phone available.
