security for motor home

proud owner of a sundance swift for three months, due to nagging neighbours parked in a place where thought would not annoy anyone, alas not being in anyone's view meant easy pickings for some yob to chisel out the passenger door lock, looks like they were scared off as driver door unlocked, but doesnt seem like they have even looked around the van, nothing taken, and not hotwired.

Obviously going to park somewhere a bit better lit and considering storage, just ordered a duosafe bar that holds the two doors together, already has an alarm and thatchams on board - any other ideas to stop it getting broken into again.

Eyesores!

It amazes me that to do almost anything to your house you have to advertise the fact outside your house that you are seeking planning, jump through hoops with the local authorities to ensure that everything matches with existing materials etc etc and yet you can stick a massive white box on wheels (caravan or motorhome) right on your drive, blighting the whole neighbourhood! Before we ever toyed with the idea of motorhoming we ensured that we had premises available to store the vehicle away from our drive. There are storage facilities everywhere! Farmers are desperate for extra sources of income and almost all have sheds/barns that offer cover! Yes it can be sometimes difficult to find storage but to say s*d the neighbours isn't really, I believe, the way forward!

Hi Virgil

No, you take me too seriously!

I have experienced difficulties with neighbours (not van-related) in the past and know the strain it causes.

Until a better solution is found though you would hope that the neighbours would understand, in the circumstances.

happy neighbours

hello Lady B.,could you not just do some painted leaves and bushes on the van , likepeople do with their wheelie bins. a bit of camoflage and no one will notice it then.

At this time of year! :¬)

o.k. then be picky. what about christmas lights , an inflatable santa on the roof of the van a few reindeer at the fender then it will look like lots of other gardens in the run up to christmas.

Camourflage

Thanks for the laughs. Virg, Irenerobbe, and Maninahat who started the ball rolling. Keep them coming. Oh! Oh! watch what you say.

Im glad that you all find it so amusing, i was actually hoping for some help not ridicule - oh well never mind

Lady Barnet

I really don't think anyone is ridiculing you. Amongst the less serious comments there are some constructive ones. They may not be practical because we don't know your circumstances:

1 Could you move the van back outside your home temporarily? (Not "s*d the neighbours"; tell them what's happened and that this is a temporary arrangement) while you;

2 Investigate secure storage. You may not live near farms etc as Virgil has suggested (and its a pain if you fancy that spontaneous weekend away) but many caravan and M/home dealers offer storage facilities, as do many marinas.

I don't know enough about your circumstances to know if this will help, but as I said earlier, I have been involved in long-running disagreements with neighbours and I really do sympathise.

Good luck.

Door locks

Hi Lady Barnet,
there is a company called Armourplate who make stainless steel door lock covers,if you ring them and place an order they will fit them whilst you wait. They prevent the door locks from being tampered with. The cost is about £40 per door plus fitting.
Happy Wandering,
Roland Rat.

How to make friends and influence people!!!!! here is a new member asking for SENSIBLE advice and all she gets is STUPID comments from some of you, no wonder she is annoyed!!!!!!!

thanks for the tips, living in london i get the feeling that this may not be the last time the van gets broken in to and at £200 a shot its not worth going through the insurance, and we are trying to decide between storage in suffolk (where we go mainly) or in hertford. Like the idea about the locks though will look into that

apologies

so sorry LabyB. i do know what it's like not to get on with the neighbours but have generally found humour the best form of defence. i'm dead lucky 'cause the things that my neighbours keep in their driveways are far more gruesome than whats in mine. there is always a solution to most problems and i'm sure you'll find a home for your m.h.. good luck

After all the hoo haa - the garage did a great job on repairing the door - never know it had had the lock chiselled out (mind you still waiting on the bill)

Took bull by the horns and have bunged it right outside the house - have made sure the bin men can get through and watched a few hairy moments with HgV's but seems all can get through.

Neighbours not made any comments - in fact shown a few of them round the inside and were quite impressed.

Well clampett family (as i affectionately call ourselves) will be loading clampett mobile with dogs, baby, et al tomorrow heading for outlaw country - combination of inlaws and northern ireland for an early christmas (alas some of us have to work it). Pa Clampett and myself will then go off on our own for our first wildcamping expedition hopefully the frostbite wont be too bad.

to late

Hi all. I have a drive way and I park what I like on it and yes s-d the neighbours. I see no point in having a nice house with large garage, driveway for which I have worked hard, not to be able to use it. I park my motorhome and boat on my land, If the neightbours don,t like it then they can move. I put up with their 4x4,s and so on.
Beating the odd person from breaking in is very hard, afterall they don,t care what damage they do. I use reinforcing around the locks to stop the less then skilled tow rag, and a disclock which is a big yellow thing that fits around the steering wheel and hides the ing lock etc. I do not pull curtains closed so I allow people to look in and see there is nothing inside. Apart from that I don,t know what to do. Put it lives on the driveway, terry

I agree with that.

I am not trying to suggest that you wind your neighbours up, but it is legal and it is your land.

We all have to rub along together. I couldn't describe a m/h as an eysore that blights a neighbourhood. Likewise I would never complain to a neighbour about bonfires, lawn mowers or their children playing.

Yes I would consider several works vans on one drive unreasonable, or an ice cream van with a noisy overnight compressor unreasonable. But certainly not a m/h.

If I had tried to please next door and this had resulted in break-ins then it would I am afraid go back on the drive, and would I patiently explain to the neighbour why.

Storage away from home is a real pain and takes away much of the spontaneity (spelling?) thats what a m/h is about. Personally, if mine could not stay on the drive, it would probably tip the scales to making ownership inpractical

However, i would never park one on the road outside someone elses house.

I feel the same

Sea Lion, Thats the way I feel, when I did park my last camper which was just transit size on the road I found some little sod had tagged it. What a pain to get off. No the camper is on the drive with the power feed running to it and all ok. Like you if it could not be there, no way would I have the thing. after all they are not small money and like all things need looking after. If I was lady B the camper would be back on that drive so fast and sod the neighbours, Sorry if this upsets some but thats the way it is. terry
