Seat belt and motorhome travel directive.

Anyone heard of the EU directive (2005/39/EC) which states that occupied seats in the rear of a motorhome must have seat belts fitted and be labelled as "Travel seats". All vehicles made after 20th October 2007 must comply but do earlier vehicles need to be compliant also? Any thoughts or experience of this?

As you say, the EU Directive applies to motorhomes built after 20th October 2007. It is not retrospective for older vehicles.

It is a vehicle construction directive and does not affect the UK seatbelt wearing legislation.

It only applies to FORWARD facing seats! Sideways bench type 'crew' seats do NOT require seat belts. Hope thar clears it up for you.

I think that your v5 will tell you how many passenger seats you legally have pre 2007 or newer. We looked into this when we were looking for vans, having 2 kids it was important. Many vans only had a V5 for 1 passenger as there were no dedicated passenger seats in the rear, this included pre 2007 vehicles :(

bewary of the hardy perenial 'Insurance' you normally need to state how many passengers your vehicle is designed to carry any more and god forbid accident or the police pull you and you will be in trouble :(
