Have I got this right? The council isn't increasing the parking charge by £1, it's just going to charge £1?
If this is the case, organising a mass protest of motorhomes is, in my view, foolish. You can just predict the the comments from councillors can't you? "So here we have these motorhomers, who claim that they enrich our local economy by spending in shops, restaurants and pubs but, when we ask them for the measly sum of £1 to park on Marine Drive, they are so upset that they will spend a lot of money driving to Scarborough to organise a mass protest of campervans. And remember, fellow councillors, we're letting them park their enormous vehicles for the same price as a Ford Ka."
There is no doubt that some motorhomers will spend money in restaurants etc. but there is also no doubt that many won't. You only have to read threads on here where people boast about how little they spend on a trip and tell us that they never eat out. Presumably, Scarborough residents see some of us sitting in our 'vans, boiling the kettle and preparing a nice lunch and jump to conclusions about the entire fraternity?
In my opinion, we shouldn't be complaining, we should be writing letters to Scarborough Council thanking them for allowing us to park on this nice bit of seaside road for just one pound and for not penalising us for being three times as long as the Kia Picanto parked next door.
Apologies in advance if I've read the newspaper article wrongly, but it does seem to me that they are imposing a total charge of just one pound and not increasing an existing charge.
