i dont mind paying, its the attitudes of some that we dont buy anyting that pees me off,

I'll be very happy to pay a quid. I have to pay £2.00 to park at work and its a lot easier to find a space in Scarborough. Cannot see how they will make much money off season as they will have to pay a chap (or women) with a van to come and collect my quid before someone nics it out of the machine.

Hi Jen

All I know is my wallet shrinks a lot faster when we are away in the van. Even without the other half to help.

Just replied on scarborough evening news and i think that we all (SHOULD) , lets make a stand and put our case forward , even if you have never visited scarborough it may help our cause .
ITS not the parking charges that bother me but the victimization of motorhome owners

i have dun, i allways do but they are sooooooooooooooooooo blinkered,

This hasn't necessarily happened at a bad time. We can turn this to our advantage.

Councillors Sharma and Jefferson are on the traffic group which meets in January. Motorhome parking is to be discussed.

I'll be emailing them, and the other five on the group, so that they have my proposals which they already have but brought up to date, in their minds right after Christmas. I'd think now is a good opportunity; I'll try to publish a draft in the next few days in the thread we've been using http://www.wildcamping.co.uk/forums/general-chat/13727-scarborough-traders-complain.html and I'd welcome comments before I finalise it.

There are now three or maybe four threads on this. All of them very good and very useful. Phil, is there a way of combining them all into one keeping all posts in date order?

yeah good post WB,

This might be of particular interest to maureen & Tom for their meeting. Sky News recently carried a report
about the High Street retailers in crisis due to the increasing numbers of super shopping centres away from the
town centres.....all these big retailers have FREE parking on site....

Seems to me that the way forward to regenerate sales in the High Street is to abolish all charges for car parks and
instead plate them to 'Parking limited to 2 hours maximum 9am - 6pm...no return within 2 hours' and let the wardens
worry about timing them....after that Motorhomes could park up and spend money in the local pubs and restaurants..
...everyone wins as the MHs would have to be away by 11am at the latest but likely most would be gone by 9am.

well lets all meet who can on a weekend in jan in the campervans etc, get the press, tv etc and show where we park up, stop overnight so the local pub gets trade as we can sleep in the van and not drive home, get fish n chips and stop for a day or 2 usually..........

let see how the council likes that, and the locals who say we done give anything back........

i love being on tv, not scared at all!!! vote for cooljules the WC group TV celeb spokesman :)

 Again i feel way out of step with other members thought's,if we were a normal motorhome site and wanted to make a point then yes let's have a meet (and give them a photo of 10+ vans together on marine drive for them to use every time the subject comes up) but we are not we are a wild camping forum we know we are breaking rules (like the rules or not) i have had 4 good weekends this year in Scarborough and all being well i will be back on boxing day for a few days, but i can't see what good a group of vans together can do for us as wildcampers except highlight the fact.

That’s typical of you, you shifty little northerner !

I go all year thinking that I have you sussed & then you come out with one of the most sensible observations that this thread has had. “I can patronise with the best of them”

Happy Christmas.

Dezi

Arthur,

I sort of agree with you about a mini mass protest just giving ammunition to those who disaprove of us but not about us being rule-breakers.

The point is that if we were rule -breakers the council would just step on us and squash what we do - but they don't. The best Councillor Blatt can do is to use us to draw attention away from what the council are doing - putting up charges for everybody. And in that picture published in the press there was not one campervan in the row of parked cars. Didn't stop him putting the finger on us though. Politicians!

Scarborough council has said that it would not be legal to distinguish between cars and campervans and, for the time being, we have to depend on that. I'll use that statement if I see a need to. Anybody who wants a copy of their email can have it. Ammunition for confronting a jobsworth?

This is not my first attempt at persuasion but if this attempt is successful it will be my first successful attempt at persuasion. The only success I have had was to confront a council and say, in effect, "do your worst, I'll see you in court." That council backed down and I got a little bit of hassle on here that you should not make them obey the rules - they'll just change the rules. Yeah! If they can.

But, maybe this time, persuasion will work.

Victor. I haven't been invited to the meeting. All they'll be looking at is what I've written down for them. January! They say they don't know the date. Yeah! Like they ring round all the members and say, "Tomorrow, chaps."

Lol...interesting thread.....to be or not to be?.....

I think the council guys have their minds more or less made up and are just looking for an excuse to move forward with their changes...
I can't see a 'Gathering of the Vans' doing any harm other than making Joe Public stop and think for a moment...if they are in fact that interested in the first place...

but it might give the retailers, restaurants, cafes, and local gift shops a heads up...

Have I got this right? The council isn't increasing the parking charge by £1, it's just going to charge £1?

If this is the case, organising a mass protest of motorhomes is, in my view, foolish. You can just predict the the comments from councillors can't you? "So here we have these motorhomers, who claim that they enrich our local economy by spending in shops, restaurants and pubs but, when we ask them for the measly sum of £1 to park on Marine Drive, they are so upset that they will spend a lot of money driving to Scarborough to organise a mass protest of campervans. And remember, fellow councillors, we're letting them park their enormous vehicles for the same price as a Ford Ka."

There is no doubt that some motorhomers will spend money in restaurants etc. but there is also no doubt that many won't. You only have to read threads on here where people boast about how little they spend on a trip and tell us that they never eat out. Presumably, Scarborough residents see some of us sitting in our 'vans, boiling the kettle and preparing a nice lunch and jump to conclusions about the entire fraternity?

In my opinion, we shouldn't be complaining, we should be writing letters to Scarborough Council thanking them for allowing us to park on this nice bit of seaside road for just one pound and for not penalising us for being three times as long as the Kia Picanto parked next door.

Apologies in advance if I've read the newspaper article wrongly, but it does seem to me that they are imposing a total charge of just one pound and not increasing an existing charge.
