This Aire in Canterbury has much to be said for it, even though it’s now gone up to £3.50 a day, so £7 overnight. Pity there aren’t more like this.

The city centre however has a large cathedral shaped object constructed it would seem largely of scaffolding and sheets. They seem to want money even to stand in the streets of the precinct to admire the outside of this triumph of the scaffolders art. At least in France you can walk round for free to admire scaffolding!

Last time we went into Canterbury, we looked to go into the Cathedral but gave it a miss due to the entry fee. Watched a programme on tv last night about Canterbury Cathedral, introduced by (Sir) Tony Robinson, and he said the running costs were £18k per day.

Should be closed and turned into a wetherspoons, Cathedrals who needs them , let the church pay for their own houses I say.

What exactly are you paying for here? If someone wanted to go in to worship can they get in free or is that not allowed?

Not something I am likely to be doing any time soon but just curious if someone knows

Saints Putlog and Ledger

Are we something missing on our calander? Is the festival of Saint Putlog and Saint Ledger. Should we be making offerings to the great Scaffolder in the sky? We’re now in Tournai and the cathedral here is also bedecked with scaffolding and displaying a shrink wrapped tower. As much as I regard all religion as a communicable disease of the intellect, I do appreciate the skill and craftsmanship of the masons of old who erected these gear edifices long before the title of structural engineer was invented...I look forward to seeing what emerges from the wrapping one day.

i love cathedrals and churches and see them as examples of the skills of the humble working man
before i enter one of these places i think of the many generations of my ancestors who paid their tithes to build and support these structures , then i look at the beautiful houses the people who work in these places get to live in for nothing , and the fine cars in which they are driven about , and all in their gorgeous vestments .
and when i'm approached by the radiant smile of the old dear asking for a 'donation' i treat them as i do any other chugger, and walk by without a second glance .

I have mixed feelings about cathedrals, churches etc,on one hand I admire the vision and workmanship, but on the other hand I think of all that money and effort that could've been directed towards benefitting humanity. I was saying something similar to a guy recently when looking at a huge Napoleonic fort, the money and effort we've put into killing each other is staggering.

Those are nice sentiments which most would agree with. Unfortunately humans are inherently greedy so there will always be takers to foil the plan
