At present I have a German fully automated Sat: System set up when I bought the MH. I wish to have an English system set up.
I have just got myself an HD ready 12v/230v flat screen with a built in Freeview and DVD.
This topic has come up many times but I still feel uncomfortable as to what I should and should not do. If I want to watch British TV in Spain, Portugal or Italy, what else do I need to get British TV. Will my German Sat:dish and reciever be okay? Or do I have to get a Sky sat: reciever and dish. I do not want to pay for the Sky card, just watch whatever free channels it puts out. Do I still have to get a sky card? Can I just buy a Sky reciever with card without getting caught into a contract? I would really appreciate it if any one could give me info: in Laymans English as I am as dumb as they come with all this tec: stuff. If there is anything I may have left out, all info would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

sat

If you want to watch itv channel 4 and 5, buy a second hand box with a yellow card, well blue card with a yellow house on, from ebay, or if you have a box buy a card from sky 20 pounds, you will need a 1.2 dish at least for most parts of Spain, so it has to be put up on a stand, if you have a sat box, you can tune in to some english channels, but not itv, 4 and 5 , take a look at satellite for caravans web site, its excellent.

Thanks Julie, will have a peep at the caravan website. I saw something like that in one of the post. Thanks once again. If other folks could fill me in any further, I would look forward to their posts.

tv in europe

this is the web site you need
http://www.satelliteforcaravans.co.uk/
an exelent site with all there is to know about sat tv and more
we get sky using a freesat card £18.50 if you find the right suplier look at sat for caravans for info on this
we use a 65 cm maxview dish and get our usual channels from copenhagen in the north to barcrlona in the south we use an old sky box and find that pluging it in to our home every six months allows it to download all the recent updates that sky dont tell you about
the further south you go the more dificult it is to get as the suply beams change and you will need to re program the sky box
but as the night time comes the harder it is to get any constant signal all to do with the shape of the world and atmosferics (spelt wrong )i believe
i dont know if the german ariel will work for sky again read all that sat for caravans has to offer

Hi Terry,
If you have a jerry sat & system, you will be able to catch all free digitals in the south of Europe. Sat & system should allways do; you don't have to change them. Just buy a card for what you like to get more. Spain is also broadcasting in English.

To update your sky box, unplug at mains, then plug back in, while holding in the back up button, wait till 4 different colour lights, light up, then let go of back up button, it will then update box, can take 10 mins or so.

To be accurate the beams don't change some of the beams from Astra sat cluster (the source of Sky TV) are more tightly focussed on the UK so are harder to receive the further you are from the UK -use just need a bigger dish and better electronics to get a go reception. So some channels are easier to receive. You don't need to reprogram the box although you can reprogram the default transponder which does make locking on to a signal easier in a weak area.

The make / nationality etc. of the dish has no impact on the reception of the signal. Pointing any dish at the relevant sat will enable reception of the unencrypted programmes if the signal is strong enough. Some sat dishes can seek the sat's automatically so it may be necessary to check that the intended dish is programmed to receive the desired channels.

Hi Belgium, My system is a German "Katherien" I heard I will not be able to pick up any English programmes because I have a different frequency/setting. Germany is 119.2E, I think English is 28.2E. HELP !!!

Thanks Terry, the second paragraph of your post is interesting. I don't want to dismantle my whole auto Sat: system. My way of thinking is that the dish is immaterial as it only picks up the signal, the LNB and reciever is what has to correspond with what you want to pick up. Is that correct?
