Himself has a big birthday coming up and I am thinking of getting him a new satnav (has to be one that takes account of the van's dimensions). As a timely coincidence, MMM magazine this month has a feature on them.

At the moment, we have the Snooper but the main reason for replacing it is that you don't seem to get map updates. So while we like it for having pre-loaded locations for aires and ACCSI, the map update function is a deal breaker.

I am liking the look of the Aguri RV720 deluxe, and the Garmin Camper 770 LMT-D.

Any thoughts or advice?

I have the 660 LMT-D and I am very pleased with it. I have a pair of rear cameras linked to this as well.

I think the 760 is the same as the 660 but with a 7" screen instead of 6"? (I went for the 660 as there was a factory return on Amazon at a great price).

A Nozatec or Xgody is not only better, but also vastly cheaper.

My Nozatec has been very useful, worth every penny. I did notice that the later Xody (which look very similar to the Nozatec) have a capacitive screen as opposed to the resistive one on my Nozatec. I was considering upgrading for that reason, but the ones I've found so far don't have AV input which I use for my reversing camera.

The aguri 720 is android tablet with built in software for GPS and dash cam, and all the benefits of a tablet .
All updates are free including speed cameras . ,being a tablet it is slow to boot up.it pairs with your phone for traffic updates, it dose not take a sim . lots of info and tutorials on you tube . the speed cameras warning is excellent.

Of the ones listed, such as the XGODY, etc. do they all cover the requirement to put in Vehicle Dimensions and Weight? This is not a typical feature of most Sat-Navs, I think? (of all the ones I have used personally, only the Garmin Camper has had that)

Yes, but they are let down by poor hardware, I think the iGo S/W is excellent

Cannot comment in that model but I have a Truck Garmin for work. Works very well and updates are very simple which I do every 6 months.

It also has a bug: if you are near the prime meridian it can make major routing errors.

Snooper do have map updates. If you have an older one it takes a bit of finding, but I rang them and got them to talk me through it.

Might as well buy a decent Android Tablet and put your own software on it. I have a Samsung S4 Tablet and it is amazingly fast. Free maps for life can mean their expected life of the equipment or they make the new map files to big to fit in the old units. CoPilot have just changed theirs so older Android Tablets will not run it.

Truck versions still take you down narrow lanes or take you miles out of your way to get to main truck routes.

We have the 770 and had it 2 years now with no problems! Updates take an age though that’s doing a full update with a not fantastic broadband speed. Was awfully expensive however

This is a simple route which way would you go from home to school If you had to add in road widths and all roads were narrow then the software would still pick a route. So they would weight the route according to Distance, Type of Vehicle, Road Width, Bridges etc.

The Aguri Motorhome & Caravan RV720 DVR looks interesting as it has built in traffic camera and connection for reversing camera (interesting for me as I have a 10 year old Garmin and no traffic cam or reversing cam and I like the idea of having only one device on the dash). Are there other sat navs with built in traffic camera AND connection for reversing camera. Also what is peoples experience of these in practice. Do you have to use the sat nav manufacture’s reversing camera - I would prefer a wired one? I have a PVC and the ability to enter vehicle dimensions is not important.

I can load my Garmin Nuvi with open source maps when travelling to places like Australia, and of course the WC POIs.

It only appears in very limited circumstances, where two routing nodes are either side of the meridian. Seems to be present for many Windows CE versions of the software, but not on the Android versions (some Xgody are Android) Easy workaround: movw the start or finish point of the route a few yards.

My point is that with 'good' software you shouldn't have to move start or finish points, my Tomtom and Garmin handle the same routes with no problem.

Presumably one camera is activated by engaging reverse gear. How is the other one set up? Obviously you wouldn't want a permanent rear view display when you want to use the sat nav. Is there a button to toggle between the sat nav and camera?

Yes, it is a bug in that many years old version. The bug was fixed almost a decade ago.
Of course TomTom and Garmin never get anywhere as near as good in the first place. But if you prefer to pay more for a vastly inferior product, feel free.

Pity xgody don't know about the fix, I only bought it last year!
Tomtom and Garmin both do what I require without the problems of xgody etc, so to me that makes them far superior.

Yup, I have one camera that is turned on by the reversing light getting power. the other I have set so when the lights are turned on, it gets power (temp way until I run a separate switched line for it - so if I want to be able to use that camera, I just turn the side lights on at the moment).

How it works on the display is you decide which is the primary camera and gets displayed automatially when powered up (so the reversing camera for me) and which is the secondary camera for which you just press an on-screen icon in the corner to show that camera (and hit the button again to turn off (and the icon only appears if that camera has power to it and so the system has detected it.)
I wanted the 2nd camera as a backup to the mirror occasionally as half my rear door glass is blocked from view.
Interestingly, the Garmin system refer to the extra camera in the settings as a "babycam". So maybe their idea was you would have this extra camera pointing at a baby seat behind you and can check on your child with a push of a button rather than turning round and taking your eyes off the road?

What is the date of the software? If you had paid another fiver for a (far better) Android) Xgody, you'd have got a much more recent version of iGo.

Don't know the software date because I have binned it - I need a satnav I can trust.
