Satellite Internet

Does anyone on here have it?

I know it is expensive to install, but I have a lump sum due.

My question is about the cost of usage...I cannot make head nor tail of Conrad Anderson's data page nor any of the others.

Shame you don't live in rural Wales, you can get it very cheap!!

Can be difficult to accurately point at the bird, the beamwidth is narrower than for Freesat/Sky

I presume you want this for mobile use as well, as dish is larger than Sky one, you'd be best with a tripod to mount the dish. Obviously you must be able to see the sky where the bird is, left of South.

Power consumption isn't too bad, but it's continuous.

I think that would be OK if you spent a lot of time in very remote areas and a heavy net user. But some of the packages seem very expensive eg Only 2GB allowance for £20.00. A broadband dongle will beat that for value easily and no large installation cost either. Providing you can get a signal that is!

The only people that I can see this would benefit is those who must have interrupted service (eg Business) or those for whom money is no object.

Or if you are in Europe. Some of the packages come with VOIP, so if you factor in the number of different sim cards you need on a tour, Data and phone. The faff of getting them etc, satellite becomes more feasible. Some give free use after 10pm until early morning, great for downloading Iplayer etc

SFR (France) charge €35 for 1 gb. The web site won't accept UK credit cards and my command of French language means I cannot top up over the phone. This means that I need an SFR outlet, but not even all of them can do top ups...and even then, you still have to make a phone call (for this one, my French is just about up to the job).

UK...3's dongle works well, but geographic coverage is still poor.

And, as Bigpeetee says, satellite is europe wide, which is where I plan to be, most of the time. And it gives me TV (the MH I am hoping to buy does not have this already). And it gives decent speeds meaning I can use skype to phone home rather than extortionate mobile charges. And it is a one payment, which I guess you can move to your next van.

The only reason I am hesitating is the thought of open heart surgery on my bank account.

Good point about roaming. I was just thinking about UK, but Europe-wide it does make more sense. I tend to be a heavy user after 10pm - 4am, so the free period would suit me, though most older motor-homers are early to bed, early to rise. I wish they gave an off peal deal on the dongle!

I was at the NEC motorhome show last weekend and I saw couples getting quoted £1300 for installation. If these costs came down to hundreds it would be more of a contender. Self installation seems a better option at the moment.

I agree that Fon is an option, but it depends where you are for the night.

In the UK, there are Fon signals in most small villages, but by experience, there are fewer connection points abroad.

If anyone wants a long range wifi antenna system, PM me, I sell them.

I think if I were travelling around europe, I would take both systems, the Wifi option is very cheap!!

I use a company for VOIP called internetcalls.com

You deposit 10 Euros and get free calls to Europe, USA, Australia and many other countries for a free period of 4 months, then you start using your credit.

You can also set up calls using your PC to the home phone and anywhere else in the world for a set up fee of 4 cents. If you use a PC headset, it's free.

I've used it all over the world, you even get a UK phone number

Try them.

That is a really good price...was that for internet, or just self tracking TV?

I have a Fonera, but I have had singular lack of success in accessing FON out in the wild. I tend to wild away from habitation in the UK and abroad, in our recent 3 month trip round Scandinavia and Eastern Europe I found not a single FON spot. Found a few free hot spots though.
